About The Position

The Waterloo Community School District is seeking a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as the Athletic Director for Waterloo United High School. As part of the district’s long-term secondary alignment plan and the development of Waterloo United High School, this individual will play a critical leadership role in building and shaping a unified athletics program that reflects the values, traditions, and competitive excellence of our community. This position represents the next step in building the administrative leadership team that will guide Waterloo United High School into its opening. During the 2026–2027 and 2027–2028 school years, this individual will serve in an athletic director role within one of the district’s secondary buildings while simultaneously leading the planning, development, and alignment of the Waterloo United athletics program in preparation for the opening of Waterloo United High School in the fall of 2028. Beginning with the 2028–2029 school year, this individual will transition to serve as a member of the Waterloo United High School administrative team. This position will play a central role in designing the future of Waterloo athletics. The Athletic Director will lead the development of program structures, establish operational systems, and spearhead the hiring of the inaugural coaching staff — including all varsity head coaches for Waterloo United High School. This leader will work collaboratively with district administration, coaches, students, and community stakeholders to ensure the successful launch of a unified athletics program that prioritizes student opportunity, competitive excellence, and strong character development. In addition, the Athletic Director will partner with community members, youth organizations, and local athletic programs to revitalize and align youth sports systems across Waterloo, ensuring that students experience a cohesive and supportive athletic pathway from youth programs through high school athletics. This position is responsible for recommending and providing overall direction and coordination for the district’s program of athletics in accordance with the goals and objectives of the Board of Education. Emphasis will be placed on developing a broad and inclusive program of extracurricular opportunities; improving the quality and consistency of coaching; maximizing the effective use of facilities and equipment; and maintaining strong relationships with students, families, and the community.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university
  • Current Iowa Teacher, Administrator License or Activities Administration Authorization (Degree in Athletic Administration and/or Sports Management)
  • Administrative experience preferred
  • Public Relations experience preferred
  • Knowledge of issues and practices pertaining to boys/girls athletics
  • Demonstrated skill in organizing ideas
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships based on mutual confidence and respect in identifying problems and their resolutions and in the evaluation of performance potential as revealed through interviews and other means of observation

Responsibilities

  • Consult daily with and inform the principal of the activities/sports, problems, and progress of the department.
  • Recommend the assignment of personnel in the department.
  • Formulate and enforce departmental policies.
  • Interpret and enforce all state, conference, and school policies.
  • Prepare for all scheduling, hiring, and contracting of officials.
  • Arrange details of: Budget Publicity Media contact Purchase of equipment and supplies to ensure teams are well-equipped within budgetary limits. Home game details – ticket sales (with reconciliation of cash), police, parking, scorers, timers, etc. Travel arrangements Payment for equipment and supplies Coaches fundraising and cash activities Practice and game facility reservations
  • Supervise: Maintenance, repair, issuance, and records of all equipment Preparation of fields and athletic areas Clearance and eligibility of student athletes
  • Hold department meetings regularly throughout the school year to review affairs related to athletics and the total program.
  • Establish, coordinate, and implement Alumni Relations programming and activities.
  • Organize, coordinate, and implement Athletic Hall of Fame programming and activities.
  • Act as the school liaison to the Athletic Booster Club and provide assistance, as needed.
  • Honest and open evaluations done in a timely manner.
  • Recommend assignment of all coaching positions.
  • Provide for academic assistance to eligible and ineligible athletes.
  • Monitor student progress in determining eligibility status.
  • Attend monthly athletic director meetings and act as a liaison for all building athletic responsibilities.
  • Establish a support program that will provide services to ineligible athletes in areas of behavior, attendance, and academics.
  • Maintain an organized and well prepared athletic department.
  • Maintain open communication with coaches, parents, and athletes.
  • Hold the conduct of coaches and athletes to a high standard
  • Act as member of the administrative leadership team in the general supervision of students at high school and specifically, high school athletic events by providing or arranging appropriate supervision for athletic activities.
  • Manage facility use agreements and ensure compliance with building and District policies, protocols, and procedures.
  • Oversee and coordinate fundraising opportunities and manage fundraising efforts.
  • Oversee, manage, and support extracurricular activities and building calendar.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
