About The Position

The Assistant Preserve Manager, based at the Clymer Meadow Preserve in northeast Texas, will be instrumental in implementing conservation programs, ecological restoration, and preserve management plans across TNC lands and regional projects. This role involves assisting with the management of five north Texas TNC preserves and contributing to stewardship efforts within the Trinity, Red, Sulphur, and Sabine River watersheds. The position is crucial for TNC's initiatives to protect and enhance grassland management on both public and private properties, aiming to boost carbon capture and storage, prevent the conversion of natural ecosystems, and support sustainable agricultural and renewable energy working lands. Requirements

  • BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in a science-related field and 1-year related experience in custodial and ecological land management or a similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with natural ecosystems, especially grasslands
  • Experience in ecological land management principles
  • Experience operating and/or repairing various types of equipment and machinery, specifically tractors and skid-steers
  • Ability to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g., NWCG FFT2 or higher, First Aid, CPR, herbicide application, ATV safety, and driver’s license)
  • Possess a valid driver's license and comply with TNC’s Auto Safety Program
  • Employment contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record

Responsibilities

  • Implement ecological restoration projects, including seed harvest, processing, storage, and planting
  • Control exotic species using mechanical and chemical techniques
  • Operate small and heavy machinery for brush/tree reduction, mowing, seed harvest, seedbed preparation, and prescribed fire preparation
  • Perform stewardship duties on partner and private lands as needed
  • Maintain preserve boundaries, fences, buildings, and other infrastructure
  • Maintain tools, equipment, vehicles, and trailers
  • Participate as a TNC-Texas prescribed fire team member
  • Plan and/or lead volunteer workdays
  • Provide access to preserve visitors, including researchers
  • Assist with other conservation projects within Texas as necessary
