About The Position

The Accelerator Operations and Physics (AOP) Group in the Accelerator Systems Division at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), Argonne National Laboratory, invites applications for a staff Assistant Physicist position focused on artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) for advanced tuning, diagnostics, and control of particle accelerators. The successful candidate will: Take a leading role in AI/ML activities within the AOP Group and collaborate with groups across APS and external institutions to maximize the impact of AI/ML applications, including contributing to and submitting proposals for research funding. Develop, implement, and deploy advanced AI/ML techniques for accelerator tuning, control, beam and equipment diagnostics, with direct application to APS accelerator systems. Support APS operation by participating in experiments and processing and analyzing experimental and operational data using AI/ML methods. Foster strong, positive working relationships with APS technical staff through effective communication and collaboration. Contribute to research and development activities related to future accelerator facilities. Document research results and present findings at internal meetings, conferences, and workshops; publish results in refereed journals and conference proceedings. May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in accelerator physics or a closely related field with 2+ years of postdoctoral experience.
  • Strong programming skills, with demonstrated proficiency in Python.
  • Experience applying machine learning techniques to accelerator operations.
  • Experience working with complex algorithms and data-driven models.
  • Experience using high-performance computing clusters for simulation and data analysis.
  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
  • Interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and ability to interact with people at all levels both within and outside the laboratory.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with accelerator modeling and simulation codes.
  • Demonstrated experience operating an accelerator independently and conducting beam experiments.
  • Solid knowledge of accelerator theory, beam dynamics, control, and measurement techniques.
  • Familiarity with EPICS-based control systems in a Linux environment.
