About The Position

The Department of Modern Languages at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Teaching-Track position in Japanese, beginning in fall 2023. Applicants must have native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English. PhD in Linguistics (Japanese), Japanese Studies, or relevant field is required, ABD considered. Demonstrated experience or interest in technology-enhanced language and culture teaching and assessment, including online course development, is highly desirable, as is interest in developing study abroad and exchange programs. Demonstrated ability to bridge language and cultural studies, with primary or secondary interests in applied linguistics, anthropological linguistics, intercultural communication, or language socialization in Japan. A healthy and growing program that serves over 400 students per year and hosts a popular major and minor, Japanese Studies at CMU is a content/culture-based, assessment-driven, and learner-centered program for developing skills in language and cultural analysis. The successful candidate will be able to teach Japanese language at all levels and develop specialized courses in their area of interest, including topics courses at the advanced level, along with interdisciplinary courses in English for the Dietrich College general education curriculum. The successful candidate will also contribute to the Applied Multilingual Studies major and minor, and will have the opportunity to teach and mentor graduate students in the MA in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition program. Teaching load is 3+3. Teaching-track faculty in the Department of Modern Languages at Carnegie Mellon enjoy robust research and professional development support, including regular research funds, conference travel, sabbatical leaves, and opportunities for advancement and leadership roles in the department, college, and university. Requirements
