About The Position

The Graduate Communications Design department at Pratt Institute is seeking a full-time tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank. This position focuses on teaching in the MFA in Communications Design and MS in Packaging Identities and Systems Design programs, emphasizing a blend of creative and technical expertise, particularly in computational practices. The successful candidate will nurture students' creative exploration while grounding their work in theoretical frameworks and practices, contributing to the department's innovative and interdisciplinary approach to design education.

Requirements

  • A doctorate or master's degree in Communications Design, Design Technology, Interaction Design, Human Computer Interaction, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching with a minimum of 3 years' experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  • A record of professional practice and creative work/research in the technical aspects of programming and the conceptual underpinnings of design and critical technology.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated intercultural competence.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and the ability to work well with diverse populations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with critical technology and innovative computational practices.
  • Knowledge of design and accessibility principles.
  • Familiarity with natural language processing and automation.
  • Experience with networks and collective practices.
  • Expertise in embodied, physical, and wearable computing.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a range of courses and electives in the candidate's area of expertise.
  • Demonstrate and maintain substantial creative practice and research within the field.
  • Participate in curriculum development and assessment of student learning.
  • Engage in committee work and other services to the department, school, and institute.
  • Contribute to the development of a strong culture of design scholarship, research, and innovation in the department.
  • Build interdisciplinary collaborations both inside and outside the School of Design.
  • Carry a load of 12 converted contact hours per semester, comprising teaching and service to the department and institute.
  • Contribute to the life of the school.
