About The Position

The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) supports the Nurse Manager in the clinical, operational, and administrative leadership of Medical, Surgical, and Emergency Room services in a Critical Access Hospital (CAH). This role requires a highly versatile RN leader who assists with direct patient care as needed, supervises nursing staff, ensures regulatory compliance, and supports quality and safety initiatives across inpatient and emergency care settings. The ANM serves as a leadership presence during assigned shifts and acts as the Nurse Manager designee as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved school of professional nursing.
  • State of Michigan Registered Nurse license in good standing required.
  • Minimum of three to five years of acute care nursing experience.
  • BLS certified; ACLS, TNCC, and PALS required.
  • Ability to lead effectively while staying actively involved in patient care.
  • Strong decision-making, communication, interpersonal, and team-building skills, with a participative management style.
  • Excellent knowledge of and commitment to the principles and practices of continuous quality improvement.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science degree preferred or commensurate experience.
  • Experience in Medical/Surgical and Emergency Nursing preferred.
  • Prior charge nurse or leadership experience is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of Critical Access Hospital staffing models and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with direct patient care for medical, surgical, and emergency patient populations as needed
  • Serves as a clinical resource for complex medical conditions, post-operative care, emergency stabilization, trauma response, and swing-bed patients
  • Supports admissions, discharges, transfers, and emergency department dispositions
  • Assists with care coordination and interdisciplinary rounds
  • Supports care delivery for patients of all ages, including medical and post-operative surgical patients
  • Assists with pain management, wound care, IV therapy, telemetry, and post-procedure monitoring
  • Oversees swing-bed or observation patients as applicable
  • Monitors patient flow, bed utilization, and length of stay
  • Provides leadership and direct care during emergencies, trauma, and code situations
  • Supports rapid triage, medical screening exams, stabilization, and disposition of ED patients
  • Assists with interfacility transfers and coordination with EMS and receiving facilities
  • Ensures readiness of emergency equipment, medications, and supplies
  • Assists with daily staffing decisions for medical, surgical, and emergency services.
  • Supports staffing coverage during nights, weekends, holidays, and in situations with limited resources.
  • Aids in scheduling, timekeeping, and staffing modifications based on census and patient acuity.
  • Supports orientation and continuous competency validation for nursing staff across all service areas.
  • Provides real-time coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback.
  • Aids in performance evaluations, corrective actions, and recognition initiatives.
  • Supports compliance with Conditions of Participation for CAHs.
  • Ensures adherence to EMTALA requirements in the Emergency Department.
  • Participates in chart audits, incident reviews, and root cause analyses.
  • Supports quality improvement initiatives related to patient safety, infection prevention, falls, and emergency response.
  • Acts as a liaison among nursing staff, providers, ancillary departments, and leadership.
  • Handles patient and family concerns while supporting service recovery.
  • Fosters teamwork, accountability, and a positive work environment.
  • Acts as the Nurse Manager designee during absences or off shifts
  • Participates in emergency preparedness planning, drills, and disaster response
  • Provides leadership support during high-acuity events and hospital-wide emergencies
  • Other duties as assigned
