About The Position

The Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible for the clinical care to patients and direct oversight of day-to-day responsibilities of nursing team members. The Assistant Nurse Manager is the main contact for a variety of nursing functions in support of management and staff. Serves as a resource for clinical expertise and mentoring/coaching of staff. Facilitates the delivery of quality patient care through strong critical thinking skills, open communication, collaboration with the interdisciplinary health team, and leadership. The Assistant Nurse Manager drives the staff to provide an exceptional experience for the patient and family.

Requirements

  • A Diploma or Associate Degree in Nursing is required.
  • At least 2 years of nursing practice experience required.
  • Registered in NYS as a licensed registered nurse professional.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a clinical expert and is an active member of the unit leadership team.
  • Responsibility and accountability for oversight of nursing and nursing support team members on the unit.
  • Performs daily leader rounding, and assures that team members are regularly rounding on all patients to assure their comfort and that team member’s concerns are addressed.
  • Functions as a leader with the ability to be a resource person both clinically and non-clinically for nursing team members and providers.
  • Welcomes students and new team members to the unit, develops relationship with them and begins mentoring new team members.
  • Strong delegation skills to both nursing and nursing support team members.
  • Participates and utilizes the performance improvement process to improve clinical practice.
  • Identifies opportunities for performance improvement and initiates action plans.
  • Develops programs and strategies to monitor the quality of patient care and patient outcomes.
  • Participates in organizational compliance audits or if delegated, holds team members accountable for completion.
  • Exceptional communication skills with team members, patients / families and providers.
  • Coordinates daily huddles and Care team rounds in order to drive the plan of care, identify and remove barriers and assist with care transitions for all patients on the unit.
  • Collaborates with the charge nurse and providers to facilitate and drive patient flow and throughput.
  • Participates in orientation and training of new team members.
  • Participates in department/system committees and disseminates the committee's work to all team members on the unit.
  • Demonstrates and maintains clinical competency in area of specialty and assists in the competency verification for other team members.
  • Attends all required educational programs and participates in supervisory team member education and training programs.
  • Completes Preceptor Training.
  • Completes mandatory education, skills training, and health screens each year in a timely manner.
  • In collaboration with the nursing leadership team, investigates and resolves patient / family complaints.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-based practice within practice area.
  • Completes at least one clinical research utilization (CRU) form for submission to Nursing Research Department annually, utilizing a research article from the last 5 years from research performed in the United States.
  • Assists Nurse Manager in developing, justifying and implementing the long-term staffing plan, identifying personnel needs and budgetary needs, and develops a recruitment plan for the unit.
  • Understands and develops competency in unit-level staffing and scheduling.
  • Assists the nurse manager in balancing the team members work schedules to provide adequate resources for the care of the patient population.
  • Assesses clinical expertise of nursing personnel, monitoring assignments and providing feedback and documentation to both team members and / or Nurse Manager.
  • Assesses the needs and provides recommendations regarding team member clinical education to Clinical Resource Nurse / Educator / Clinical Nurse Specialist.
  • Completes performance appraisals for direct reports and assists Nurse Manager with performance appraisals for other team members on the unit.
  • Manages the performance of team members with the support of the Nurse Manager.
  • Assists Nurse Manager in developing a unit-level succession plan and is an active part of the plan.
  • Timely completion of team member performance appraisals.
  • Completion of annual mandatory education and annual skills training.
  • Improvement of annual quality metrics for the unit.
  • Improvement of patient flow, patient experience and team member experience.
  • Improved turnover and retention of nursing team members.
