Position Summary: Interfaces with the administrative and clinical nursing staff to provide leadership in improving and maintaining the delivery of care processes for specific units and/or patient populations. The Assistant Nurse Manager assumes delegated responsibility for implementation of daily operations for specific units and/or patient populations.

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire
  • Minimum of 2 years acute care RN experience in patient care
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, decision making, and critical thinking skills
  • Proficiency with computer software applications (such as Microsoft programs)
  • Demonstrates time management, organization of workload, delegation, attention to detail and thoroughness
  • Collaborates and develops effective interpersonal relationships with nursing staff, medical staff, interdisciplinary teams, and other hospital departments
  • Demonstrates effective teaching skills for staff and patient education
  • Demonstrates job-related experience with fostering a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment and/or otherwise demonstrate their ability to foster a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment for people from all types of backgrounds and viewpoints.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to professional and legal standards of nursing practice.
  • Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of standards of care for a patient population, which are consistent with current nursing practice and the condition and age of the patients.
  • Assists Nurse Manager in the development and coordination of unit specific and hospital-wide competency programs and educational opportunities to ensure and maintain quality patient care, and to facilitate opportunities for staff to improve and expand their skills.
  • Assists the Nurse Manager with operations of the unit, which may include but not be limited to staffing, scheduling, payroll, variance tracking and follow-up, etc.
  • Collaborates with Nurse Manager in the development, implementation and evaluation of department/unit Quality Management program.
  • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager in implementation of department and unit strategic plans as well as planned change to optimize unit functioning.
  • Coordinates services with Material Management and Engineering to assure maintenance of unit supplies and repair of equipment.
  • Develop and implement new equipment and technology training programs.
  • Reviews new equipment and supplies as needed with sales representatives and medical staff.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates staff education and orientation programs based on personnel performance and patient care standards.
  • Plans and assists with the clinical experience of students in the unit.
  • Mediates issues involving patient/families, hospital personnel and public.
  • Participates in and contributes to hospital/department/unit committees, meetings and/or projects in keeping with organizational/units) strategic goals.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates staff education and orientation programs based on personnel performance and patient care standards.
  • Plans and assists with the clinical experience of students in the unit
  • Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of research-based standards, policies and procedures.
  • Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of research-based standards, policies and procedures.
  • Educates staff about changes.
  • Participates in the ongoing implementation of current regulatory standards in order to meet state and national agency accreditation.
  • Performs human resource functions including interviewing, selection, training, performance evaluation and disciplinary action.
  • Practices according to department/unit policies, procedures, protocols and practice guidelines to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Provides feedback and support to staff on the unit to assist them to improve their performance.
  • Provides input into financial management activities including operational and capital budgetary decisions and participates in the implementation of specific cost control strategies.
  • Responsible for twenty-four hour management of patient care areas) to ensure that optimal patient outcomes are achieved in the absence of the Nurse Manager.
  • Serves as a resource for patient care problems.
  • Serves as a role model for staff by demonstrating clinical expertise when providing direct patient care.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
