About The Position

We are one of 70 National Cancer Institute designated cancer centers. The 20 bed Thoracic Cardiovascular ICU (TCV ICU) serves patients who undergo such cardiac, vascular, and thoracic surgical procedures as CABG, valve replacement/repair, heart transplantation, and lung transplantation. Patients include those who require re-do sternotomy, as well as mini-sternotomy, TAVR procedures, esophagectomy, pneumonectomy, aortic aneurysm repair, and CABG/valve combination procedures. Nurses care for patients who require a variety of mechanical circulatory support devices, as well as ECMO. Patients are recovered in the TCV ICU postoperatively, where they stay for a minimum of 24 hours or longer, as needed to wean ventilatory support and vasoactive infusions. The TCV ICU is looking for a transformational leader responsible for supporting the nurse manager in administrative duties of the unit, especially during off shifts. The Assistant Nurse Manager will provide leadership by collaborating with members of the health care team to maintain standards for professional nursing practice in the clinical setting.

Requirements

  • Graduate of accredited nursing program.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required within 5 years of hire.
  • At least two years' experience as a registered nurse.
  • Licensed to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Support the nurse manager in administrative duties of the unit, especially during off shifts.
  • Provide leadership by collaborating with members of the health care team to maintain standards for professional nursing practice.
  • Participate in organizational and unit based quality improvement activities.
  • Provide input on standards of care.
  • Provide patient care on an as needed basis and maintain clinical competencies.
  • Supervise care provided by maintaining high visibility to patients/families and staff in the clinical area(s).
  • Share accountability with manager for unit/department/organizational goals achievement including patient experience, team member engagement and continuous process improvement.
  • Manage staff including recruitment, retention, coaching, training, evaluation and development.
  • Prepare and delegate work schedules and workflow.
  • Participate in basic human resource functions under supervision from manager.
  • Provide managerial support as required.
  • Develop, implement and participate in Quality Improvement Processes activities.
  • Assist staff in development of problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Maintain all records pertaining to staff competency and quality audits.
  • Serve as a professional role model, coach, and resource for employees.
  • Participate actively in Nursing and/or hospital committees and work groups.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the units shared governance model.
  • Assume responsibility for own professional growth.
