About The Position

UI Health Care presents an opportunity for an experienced nurse leader to join our team. We are seeking a full time Assistant Nurse Manager (Nursing Supervisor) for the Neurology Clinic. The Assistant Nurse Manager interfaces with the administrative and clinical nursing staff to provide leadership in improving and maintaining the delivery of care processes for a specific unit and/or patient populations. The Assistant Nurse Manager assumes delegated responsibility for implementation of daily operations for specific units and/or patient populations. Changing Lives.® The Assistant Nurse Manager (Nursing Supervisor) manages direct care nursing functions to assure that health services, medical care, medical/health professions education, and evidence-based practice research programs are delivered effectively and efficiently. Positions in this job family will have direct patient care responsibilities. Efforts will focus on planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations, clinical and education programs of clinical departments.

Requirements

• A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is required.
• Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire.
• 1+ years of nursing experience with demonstrated skills in leadership.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with computer software applications (such as Microsoft programs).
• Demonstrates time management, organization of workload, delegation, attention to detail and thoroughness.
• Collaborates and develops effective interpersonal relationships with nursing staff, medical staff, interdisciplinary teams, and other hospital departments.
• Demonstrates effective teaching skills for staff and patient education.
• Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Responsibilities

• Hire or assist in hiring nursing unit staff through effective and timely recommendations.
• Develop and manage the talents, strengths and behaviors of assigned staff as directed by the Nurse Manager.
• Assist in matters of promotion, transfers and disciplinary action, as directed by the Nurse Manager.
• Coach staff to participate in team decision-making and actively seek participation from assigned staff on decision-making and customer service improvement activities.
• Provide staff incentives/rewards for contributions towards achievement of service excellence.
• Complete staff evaluations, for assigned staff, on time with written, solid justification.
• Assure staff members are compliant with competencies, policies, procedures and regulations.
• Understand and apply appropriately the provisions in the union contracts.
• Create an atmosphere which provides for effective recruitment and retention of qualified staff.
• Ensure that all employees are treated with respect and in a manner consistent with University policies related to equal employment opportunity.
• Encourage staff/employees to meet or exceed customer needs and expectations.
• Actively help manage operating expenses for the unit by monitoring the unit’s operating budget.
• Review financial reports and provide insights to budget variances to nurse leaders.
• Recommend budget ideas, resources and cost containment strategies through participation in the development of the unit operating budget.
• Assist the Nurse Manager in developing a staffing plan and is open to creativity in staff scheduling/flexibility.
• Participate in division-wide budget preparation including calculation of projected costs and expenses.
• Monitor departmental account expenditures, identify irregularities and recommend corrective action.
• Collaborate with nurse leaders to identify Quality Management and patient satisfaction opportunities for improvement.
• Incorporate the principles of Service Excellence to ensure positive patient/customer relations.
• Implement and maintain standards and quality plans.
• Identify inefficiencies in current practice/processes, demonstrate tolerance for change and develop a means to enhance the process.
• Consistently make sound judgments after gathering factual, objective information.
• Create and maintain a workplace of choice which motivates employees to work at optimal efficiency.
• Engage staff in meeting plan goals.
• Supervise care delivery and assist in coordinating patient care teams on the unit to maximize customer service and continuity of care.
• Assist the Nurse Manager in developing flexible staffing and reallocating priorities to ensure optimal patient care.
• Serve as a resource for patient care problems.
• May provide some patient care.
• Collaborate with nursing leaders to develop and implement unit/clinic or division strategic plans.
• Use customer feedback in planning and providing service.
• Communicate with physicians, staff and other health care providers on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations within the unit/clinic.
• Communicate with patients, families, and staff to address and resolve issues.
• Utilize human resources data and budgetary information to formulate recommendation to Nurse Manager and/or Directors/Clinical Functions.
• Provide evaluative feedback for staff members and health care students.
• Coach the staff in implementation of standards of care, professional development, promotes staff specialty & clinical certifications.
• Work with clinical instructors/educators to facilitate clinical education experiences.
• Invest in own continuous learning and skill enhancement.
• Support unit evidence-based practice research initiatives by facilitating the incorporation of quality management and evidence-based practices in nursing care.
• Support changes in nursing care using evidence-based practice.
