About The Position

As an Assistant Nurse Manager at UNC Health Appalachian, you'll play a key leadership role in supporting inpatient nursing operations and ensuring high-quality, compassionate patient care. Working closely with the Director of Inpatient Nursing, Nurse Manager, and interdisciplinary teams, you'll help foster a collaborative, patient-centered environment while upholding clinical excellence, safety, and professional standards. This role is ideal for an experienced Registered Nurse who is passionate about leadership, ethical decision-making, and supporting both patients and frontline nursing staff in a mission-driven healthcare organization. Compensation: Starts at $40.02/hour and is commensurate with experience, qualifications, certification, and internal equity. Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in Nursing required
  • Minimum of two years of Registered Nurse experience required
  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of North Carolina
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association required at time of hire
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and quality metrics
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a compassionate, patient-centered approach
  • Ability to delegate effectively and support nursing teams
  • Commitment to customer service, patient safety, and high-quality care delivery
  • Demonstrated professionalism and accountability in clinical practice
  • Ability to lift, position, push, pull, and/or transfer patients weighing 50+ pounds
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, squatting, twisting, turning, and reaching
  • Manual dexterity and functional mobility for patient care activities
  • Near visual acuity for detailed work (20 inches or less)
  • Regular exposure to bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, and infectious materials
  • Frequent exposure to mechanical, electrical, and environmental hazards
  • Occasional exposure to unpleasant odors, chemicals, and accident-related hazards
  • Requires flexibility to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Extended periods of standing and walking (8+ hours per shift)

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Support nursing leadership in the daily management and oversight of inpatient nursing services to ensure safe, high-quality patient care.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Inpatient Nursing, Nurse Manager, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams to uphold care standards and improve patient outcomes.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, staff, and leadership to maintain safe, compassionate, and coordinated care.
  • Assist with delegating assignments, managing staffing needs, and supporting daily unit operations.
  • Respond to patient emergencies and changes in condition, ensuring timely and appropriate clinical interventions.
  • Provide direct patient care within the scope of RN licensure and organizational policies.
  • Promote accountability, professionalism, and a positive, team-oriented work environment.
  • Ensure compliance with UNC Health Appalachian policies, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
  • Support quality, safety, and patient experience initiatives aligned with organizational values.
