The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) provides supervision of the daily operations and work activities of professional nursing and ancillary services staff on the assigned unit. The ANM supports ongoing operations of the department/unit independently as needed and provides direct patient care as required. In the absence of the Nurse Manager (NM), the ANM assumes roles and responsibilities of the NM or applicable 'one up' position. The ANM works to support adequate staffing levels and skill mix for all shifts through the development, preparation, and maintenance of staffing schedules that meet department/unit needs and apply to variable census conditions. The ANM oversees the delivery of patient care, directs and delegates patient care assignments to staff based on patient care needs, staff availability, and patient safety, and ensures current competency of all staff while confirming compliance with regulatory requirements. The ANM actively participates in the performance appraisal process, holds staff accountable for performance standards, mediates staff conflicts, and collaborates with the Nurse Manager and Charge Nurse on various unit needs. The ANM monitors high-risk cases, identifies operational problems, and addresses patient/family concerns in a timely manner. The role includes serving as a resource and role model/mentor to charge nurses and staff, with variations in duties based on the assigned customer care unit(s).
