About The Position

The Assistant News Director at CBS19 KYTX is a leadership role focused on enhancing the station's storytelling and news coverage across multiple platforms. The position requires a collaborative leader who can manage various projects, coach journalists, and make critical decisions during breaking news events. The Assistant News Director will work closely with the news team to ensure content reflects the diverse communities served and aligns with the station's core values.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field and news leadership experience
  • 4 years of content experience, including generation of original content
  • Solid journalistic and content judgement that emphasizes accurate, fair and unique local content, along with community engagement
  • Excellent people management skills
  • Strong communication and conflict management skills
  • Strong organizational skills in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with producers, reporters, anchors, digital desk producers, and photographers on compelling, impact-driven original storytelling, daily news coverage, and lead the department into the future of media.
  • Prioritize collaboration between all staffers to create original content to produce newscasts, digital content, and special programming.
  • Spearhead and foster the creation of original, unique content for our OTT and digital platforms, ensuring we remain at the forefront of local news, and differentiate us from our competitors.
  • Make split-second decisions to lead the news team during breaking news and severe weather events.
  • Skillfully use social media and digital tools to research, discover, and distribute content.
  • Work with all stakeholders to ensure a multi-platform content approach in every stage of the news gathering process.
  • Partner with news leadership to elevate our core values, internal DE&I culture, and our Race and Culture content.
  • Strategize with the executive team on goals focused on growing our audience, our content, and our people.
  • Build relationships with news sources and community stakeholders.
  • Execute administrative duties such as managing direct reports, creating schedules, and training new employees.
  • Assist in training and providing valuable feedback for the entire editorial team.
  • Evaluate workflow efficiencies and adjust processes and procedures as necessary.
  • Work flex shifts as necessary during breaking news and weather events.
  • Lead a culture that owns enterprise reporting and breaking news across all content platforms.
  • Interact daily with all department heads in a mutual effort to achieve station goals and extend our brand.
