Together, we are building a sustainable future for local news. KGW in Portland, Oregon, is looking for a transformational, people-oriented leader to serve as Assistant News Director. At KGW, the Assistant News Director works closely with the News Director to run daily news operations, focusing on content across all platforms and staff management. Common tasks include assigning stories, critiquing broadcasts, ensuring journalistic standards, and filling in for the News Director – all while driving innovation in a multi-platform news environment. The Assistant News Director manages reporters and producers, approves scripts and copy across platforms, coaches employees and helps create strategies to grow audience. It’s a job where no two days are the same and requires someone who is good at thinking on their feet and adapting to challenging situations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field.
  • Proven experience in news programming and leadership with several years in news management.
  • Experience in managing a team, including managing both senior employees and early-career team members.
  • Strong decision-making, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with digital news production and multi-platform content delivery. Experience with streaming strategy and execution is a must.
  • Ability to mentor and motivate a diverse team.

Responsibilities

  • Operational Oversight: Manages daily newsroom activities, ensures deadlines are met, and serves as the News Director in their absence.
  • Content & Editorial: Develops news coverage plans, works with journalists to build stories, finalizes scripts, and provides daily critiques of newscasts and digital content.
  • Staff Leadership: Hires, trains, and mentors news staff (reporters, producers, etc.), fostering a positive, high-performing culture.
  • Multi-Platform Focus: Coordinates news coverage across all platforms (TV, digital, streaming, social), with an emphasis on digital growth.
  • Quality & Standards: Ensures adherence to journalistic ethics, libel laws, and the station's brand standards, focusing on quality and ratings success.
  • Strategic Planning: Collaborates with management on content philosophy, marketing, and achieving ratings goals.
