The Assistant News Director will lead this dominant legacy newsroom, focusing on people, community, culture, and storytelling. This role involves assisting in creating and executing projects to "reimagine" the future of the industry and maximize new and emerging digital platforms, serving as a stepping stone for aspiring news directors.

Requirements

  • News Consumer: Constantly cultivate exclusive content - monitor all available platforms.
  • Digital Competency: Solid understanding of current platforms, distribution of content, and tools to measure growth. A mindset that always places digital first.
  • Editorial Leadership: Excellent news judgment, enterprise/investigations support, fairness/ethics, strong writing/headline skills, and coaching to elevate storytelling.
  • Motivational Skills: Capability to motivate team while holding those you lead accountable to high journalistic standards and the necessary planning skills for enterprise reporting.
  • Content Production Knowledge: Understanding of basic rundown systems (ENPS), digital CMS, live production basics, field workflows, and modern video formats (vertical, explainers, lives).
  • Superb Communication Skills: Desire and ability to cultivate and maintain sources with a high-level of regular communication.
  • Management Experience: 3+ years newsroom leadership (EP/Managing Editor/Asst ND)
  • Record of Success: Proven skills to direct breaking-news coverage on all platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise reporters, anchors, videographers, and producers.
  • Review scripts and rundowns, maintain quarterly TSR schedule.
  • Plan/direct daily news coverage across all shows and social media platforms.
  • Assist the news director in maintaining newsroom standards and accountability.
  • Work alongside the digital content manager to distribute news fast on all platforms.
  • Plan future coverage and create tools to track ongoing and follow up coverage.
  • Create tracking systems to maintain accountability for daily enterprise story pitches.
