About The Position

The Medical Assistant is responsible for providing care to clinic patients under the direction of a physician, health care provider or Registered Nurse, with the primary focus of assisting the Provider in the delivery of high quality patient care. This position requires accurate documentation in the patient chart specific to scope of practice for the Medical Assistant role. The Medical Assistant will perform in-house lab tests, EKG’s, assist with basic procedures, and administer and document medications and immunizations under the direction and supervision of a health care provider or RN. The Medical Assistant will also follow-up with all outstanding patient orders, referrals, and prior authorizations daily. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two (2) years experience in a clinical setting; outpatient clinic / physician’s office nursing is desired but not required.
  • Current AHA BLS certification for healthcare providers required.
  • Basic computer knowledge (Microsoft Office, electronic health record).
  • Demonstrates ability to read, write, and clearly express one’s self in English 100% of the time.
  • Demonstrates ability to listen.
  • Demonstrates ability to express or exchange ideas by means of spoken work, to impart oral information to others or the public and to convey detailed spoken instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly.

  • Graduate of an accredited MA program is desired but not required.
  • May consider training new graduates or candidates without experience.
  • CLIA waived laboratory testing experience desired but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately and efficiently completes all elements of patient intake following clinic workflows and protocols. Appropriate documentation of the patient intake includes, but is not limited to: medications, allergies, history of present illness, procedure history, social history, family history, depression / suicide screening, cancer screening and immunization status.
  • Accurately obtain patient vital signs and documents in the electronic medical record.
  • Demonstrates sound clinical judgement skills to assure the delivery of safe and effective provider-driven care for the clinic patient.
  • Acts as a liaison between the rural health clinic care team and the clinic patient, promoting a culture of effective communication, collaboration and a commitment to service and clinical excellence.
  • Receives patient phone calls appropriately and sends messages in the electronic health record to appropriate parties.
  • Works closely with providers and the rural health clinic leadership team to assure a seamless and positive experience for clinic patients and their family members.
  • Actively participates in training new clinical staff members.
  • Efficiently and accurately collects and documents patient related quality data in accordance with clinic workflows and protocols.
  • Performs pre-visit planning for scheduled patients daily, by reviewing the medical record for needed cancer screenings and immunizations. Relays information to the provider examining the patient.
  • Accurately performs CLIA waived, point of care, laboratory tests as ordered by the Provider.
  • Provides additional patient care as ordered within the MA scope of practice, including completing dressing changes, administering medications, suture / staple removal, EKG, nebulizer treatments, ear lavage, orthopedic device fitting and other Clinic appropriate nursing tasks as ordered by the provider in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Performs injections, using appropriate technique, appropriate dose calculations, and documents accurately in the electronic health record. Must have RN verification and double check prior to injection.
  • Researches each medication to be given and knows the appropriate doses, side effects, and contraindications etc.
  • Utilizes resources such as Lexicomp, Nursing Drug Handbooks, and PSMC pharmacist to ensure patient safety.
  • Follows the seven (7) medication rights (right patient, right medication, right dose, right time, right route, right indication and right documentation) and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  • Safely administers and correctly documents immunizations as directed/ordered by the Provider.
  • Accurately documents medication samples given to patients.
  • Initiates and completes all department specific, initial intake patient assessments following established documentation requirements in the electronic medical record.
  • Transfers care, when needed, following hospital procedure, utilizing the SBAR format.
  • Evaluates the patient’s general condition, including obtaining vital signs, height and weight and notifies the provider of any abnormal findings.
  • Provides preventive care information that matches patient age, sex, and health status.
  • Works with the provider to reinforce patient education and prior patient teaching surrounding disease state, treatment plan, and medications.
  • Utilizes the National Patient Safety goals in providing patient care.
  • Follows up on all outstanding orders in a timely manner.
  • Reviews chart preparation including order verification, insurance authorization verification, and lab orders placed by the provider.
  • Ensures patients’ next appointments are scheduled and appropriate follow-up.
  • Responds to patient portal messages in a timely manner.
  • Participates in the coordination of care by bringing any concerns to his/her direct supervisor and/or the Team providers.
  • Communicates effectively with ordering provider to ensure that all orders are accurate and complete.
  • Performs approved nursing procedures as defined by specific department and successful completion of associated competencies.
  • Completes all Cerner documentation required in accordance with competencies, trainings, and PSMC policy and procedures.
  • Utilizes efax to process faxes.
  • Uses approved abbreviations. Refer to PSMC policy: Abbreviations in the Medical Record.
  • Assists providers, other department, and hospital staff.
  • Use at least two identifiers when confirming the identity of each patient (i.e., name and date of birth).
  • Demonstrates proficiency in completion and documentation of patient data, using the correct electronic health record template for visit. (i.e., Medicare Annual Wellness, Adult Intake, Pediatric Intake and CDL Exam).
  • Documents all patient contact and/or care/treatment and medications administered in the EMR.
  • Reconciles Immunization forecaster utilizing CIIS, prints recommended schedule for appropriate visits.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Identifies and addresses psycho-social needs of patients and families. Appropriately adjusts care for patients of all cultural and religious backgrounds.
  • Carries out medical and surgical asepsis during treatments and special procedures. Utilizes universal precautions with all patients.
  • Reduces potential for infection by instituting appropriate level of infection precautions based on patient condition.
  • Utilizes required templates and/or forms when documenting within the electronic health record.
  • Presents / provides patients with appropriate patient education and visit summaries at the end of each visit.
  • Rooms all patients in a timely fashion and in a professional manner.
  • Demonstrate willingness to perform tasks and complete assigned work, does not leave unfinished tasks for others to complete.
  • Prioritizes tasks so that the most important tasks are completed first.
  • Initiates action to prevent the occurrence of any potential problems or nonconformities relating to patient care or supporting activities.
  • Initiates, recommends or provides solutions through designated channels.
  • Serves as a mentor to new MA staff, providing continuous learning support.
  • Preps exam/procedure rooms for patients and maintains clean and sanitary exam rooms.
  • Stocks and maintains medical supplies in exam/procedure rooms so necessary items are available for provider/patient.
  • Checks and removes outdated supplies on a monthly basis.
  • Creates and maintains a sterile field for appropriate procedures.
  • Assures insurance authorizations do not expire for patients during treatment and submits for renewal when appropriate.
  • Demonstrates efficient operation of multi-line phone system.
  • Responsible for monitoring, checking and acting on messages in Artera at least once at the beginning of the shift and end of shift and as required throughout the day.
  • Monitors and responds to Primary Care Team message centers.
  • Follows up on patient messages, phone calls, voice mails and faxes daily.
  • Initiates and completes medication prior authorizations for patients as needed.
  • Pursues professional growth and maintains specialized knowledge and skills in clinic practice by participating in professional organizations and/or on-going continuing education/in-service training with emphasis in outpatient clinic practice.
  • Initiates and accurately completes DME paperwork for any patient fitted with DME supplies.
  • Monitors and maintains the incoming Clinic fax folder.
  • Participates in shared clinic tasks such as opening/closing procedures, bi-annual inventory, stocking of supplies and routine supply expiration practices.
  • Locks medication cabinet, vaccine refrigerator and medication sample closet at the end of each business day.
  • Unlocks medication cabinet, vaccine refrigerator and medication sample closet at the beginning of each business day.
  • Participates in bi-annual inventory process. Assists in the outdating of expired supplies.
  • Monitors and records temperatures on all refrigerators twice daily.
