About The Position

Under the direction of the District Energy Plants Manager, the Assistant Manager supports the operation, maintenance, and optimization of DFW Airport’s thermal energy production and distribution systems, water storage/distribution plants, source isolation deicing systems, and pre-treatment plant systems. This role assists in planning, scheduling, and coordinating personnel and resources to ensure efficient and reliable system performance while maintaining compliance with industry standards and regulations.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in business, public administration, engineering, or a related field, including formal training in a relevant industry trade (mechanical, electrical, HVAC, energy systems, etc.).
  • Three (3) plus years of related experience in the operation or maintenance of thermal energy, district energy, water storage/distribution, or wastewater treatment systems.
  • One (1) plus year of supervisory or lead experience in a technical or industrial setting.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in place of the above requirements.
  • Possession of a valid Class C driver's license.
  • Knowledge of thermal energy utilities – chilled water, heating, steam generation, and distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of potable water and wastewater distribution systems, including treatment methods and regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of industrial control systems (SCADA, BAS, PLCs, etc.) used in utility management.
  • Knowledge of budgeting and resource management, with the ability to track and optimize operational costs.
  • Knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) for asset tracking and reporting.
  • Skill in basic problem-solving and troubleshooting to resolve system failures and operational inefficiencies.
  • Skill in effective written and verbal communication, to interact with internal teams, leadership, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to coordinate with internal departments, engineering teams, and contractors on maintenance, upgrades, and new construction projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings related to energy and water infrastructure.
  • Ability to enforce safety procedures and industry best practices in a high-risk industrial environment.
  • Must obtain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Airport Identification/Access Badge (badge) in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements in Chapter 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 1500 et al., and DFW Airport’s Airport Security Program within thirty (30) days from date of employment and maintain qualification for a SIDA badge upon each badge renewal.
  • This is a designated safety sensitive position as defined in DFW Airport’s Drug and Alcohol Administrative Policy and Procedure. Applicants selected for this position will be required to pass a drug test prior to employment and to submit to drug screening on a random basis during the length of their employment in the safety sensitive position.
  • This is a designated Essential Employee position as defined in DFW Airport’s Categories and Classifications Administrative Policy and Procedure. An essential employee is one whose attendance is required to maintain airport operations during an emergency or inclement weather situation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, scheduling, assigning, and coordinating the daily operation and maintenance of thermal energy, water storage/distribution, deicing, and pre-treatment plant systems.
  • Support the monitoring of energy production, consumption, and system performance, ensuring operational efficiency and compliance.
  • Provide technical oversight and support to supervisors and skilled personnel in troubleshooting and optimizing equipment performance.
  • Assist in the review and evaluation of job priorities, coordinating workforce and equipment allocation to optimize efficiency.
  • Monitor and manage shop inventories, ensuring the availability of critical spare parts and supplies.
  • Assist in budget preparation, tracking expenditures, and providing input on cost-saving strategies for labor, equipment, and materials.
  • Support capital improvement planning, identifying areas for system upgrades and process improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and operational standards and enforce policies and procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Maintain operational records, generate reports, and contribute to data-driven decision-making for energy and utility system improvements.
  • Assist in training and development programs for staff, ensuring proper certification and competency in technical and safety procedures.
  • Support emergency response efforts related to system failures, severe weather events, or other operational disruptions
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
