About The Position

Thurston County Public Works is recruiting for three (3) Assistant Maintenance Technicians to join our dynamic, energetic, and innovative Road Operations team. The successful candidate will perform traffic control within work sites, operate assigned equipment, and perform other general labor duties. Essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: Perform labor associated with maintenance and repair of County roadway systems including traffic control, vegetation control, asphalt patching, and assistance at the County rock pit sites. Control traffic by flagging to guide traffic through work areas and explain to public reasons for the job being performed; perform traffic control by properly placing signs and cones. Drive and operate a variety of equipment, such as, but not limited to: 5-yard dump truck Tractor broom Shoulder mower Air compressor/Jackhammer Forklift Portable compactor Portable brush cutter Will be assigned to various maintenance activities such as, but not limited to: Brush crew Grading Traffic control Ditching Patching Chip Seal Belt loading Shoulder rock Bridge crew Mowing Essential Personnel: This position is considered to be an essential worker and may be required to work during non-business hours or closures in order to meet operational requirements and needs, such as clearing roads during a snow and ice event.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two years’ experience in road maintenance, construction, traffic control, and/or heavy equipment operation.
  • Must possess a Washington Traffic Flagging Card or obtain one within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must hold a valid First Aid Card or obtain within three (3) months of employment.
  • Current Washington State Driver’s License or have requested and obtained an appropriate accommodation.
  • A valid Washington State Class A, Commercial Driver’s License with air brake. A special endorsement for tanker must be obtained within six months of hire date. If assigned to Road Operations, cannot have a manual restriction on CDL.
  • Employee must meet certification requirement in the department's equipment training program for this classification within probationary period of employment and may not train on Maintenance Technician equipment before probationary period is complete.

  • Ability to safely operate road construction equipment.
  • Ability to make minor mechanical repairs on equipment used in road maintenance and construction.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain daily work logs and inventory files.
