About The Position

This position supervises a group of maintenance and/or clerical employees responsible for providing a safe driving thoroughfare within a designated geographical area. The role reports to a Maintenance Section Supervisor at a maintenance section with a rank sum ratio in accordance with the published rank sum. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis and involves contact with the public. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, referring all unusual issues to the supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
  • 5 years of experience in roadway maintenance or construction related work.
  • 1 year supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Knowledge of applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.
  • Knowledge of incident management procedures.
  • Knowledge of inventory/stock control procedures.
  • Knowledge of budgeting methods and procedures.
  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external.
  • Ability to plan, assign, direct, coordinate and review the work of professional, administrative and technical employees.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to delegate both routine and important tasks and decisions; shares authority but has ultimate accountability.

Responsibilities

  • Assigns and oversees the work of section and contracted crews; ensures all projects follow established safety guidelines.
  • Assists in budget preparation for the section.
  • Assists with planning, coordinating and implementing emergency response to inclement weather, accidents, and hazardous spills affecting area roadways.
  • Handles public complaints.
  • Inspects maintenance contract work.
  • Inspects road conditions, work-in-progress and work completed by the crews and contractors.
  • Maintains records on materials, supplies and personnel.
  • Oversees scheduling of equipment, material and personnel necessary for section projects.
  • Responsible for operations of section in absence of supervisor.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
