About The Position

The Assistant Librarian embodies the tenets set forth in the mission statement of the Seattle Symphony. The hallmark of this position is to assist in providing musically relevant services and resources to conductors, players and administrative staff. The Assistant Librarian will assist the Co-Principal Librarians in preparing materials to the highest artistic standard utilizing all available resources and tools of communication, collegiality, and technology. The ideal candidate will possess the qualifications stated in this job description and/or the willingness and aptitude to learn them while filling the job functions.

Requirements

  • A degree in music preferred as well as experience with a professional orchestra or ensemble.
  • Prior orchestral performance experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of musically relevant aspects of symphonic music.
  • Experience marking bowings and understanding of string markings.
  • Neat handwriting and hand manuscript is essential.
  • Ability to read music, knowledge of clefs, transpositions, etc.
  • Knowledge of/willingness to learn basic music theory, history, and relevant terminology.
  • Knowledge of/willingness to learn Sibelius/Dorico (or other engraving software), Photoshop or Adobe Acrobat
  • Experience using digital copy machines or aptitude to learn.
  • Must be highly organized, demonstrate initiative, possess strong problem-resolution skills, and be able to participate successfully in a fast-paced, team-oriented, constantly changing environment.
  • Communicate effectively with individuals, take direction as necessary, and calmly and efficiently handle situations ranging from routine to emergency.
  • Possess excellent communication, organizational and time management skills, and the ability to prioritize and multi-task as necessary.
  • Have the ability to maintain any confidentiality necessary to the job.
  • A music librarian skills test is part of the interviewing process
  • Compliance with rules governing members of the CBA and applicable sections of the staff handbook. The staff dress code applies to all those participating in the Library.
  • The Seattle Symphony is a fragrance-free workplace. This includes scents that linger from soap, shampoo, detergent, deodorant, etc.
  • The functions of this position are performed primarily in an office environment.
  • Regular activities include frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and bending.
  • This position requires pulling, lifting, and climbing stairs.
  • Ability to speak, hear, and communicate clearly while handling inquiries, telephone calls and constituent requests.
  • Specific vision abilities require close visual acuity for viewing a computer screen, reading, preparing, entering and/or analyzing data, marking parts for several hours at a stretch without visual fatigue or hand cramps.
  • This position requires repetitive motions of the wrists, hands and fingers for typing at a standard keyboard and regular pinching, picking up and holding pencils and erasers and other desk tools.
  • Must have the ability to lift 30 pounds as needed and up to 20 pounds while standing on a ladder over one’s head.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with bowings and part preparation:
  • Participate in marking of parts including bowings, cuts, errata, rehearsal systems, and other editing.
  • Participate in the circulation and rotation among string principals.
  • Maintain bowing circulation information.
  • When on concert duty, place music folders on stage accurately and quickly in coordination with stage crew.
  • Assist in cataloguing and maintaining the Seattle Symphony Permanent Collection.
  • Ability/willing to learn to repair parts and scores.
  • Assist in the timely placement of music in orchestra folders as required by CBA.
  • Ability to provide your own transportation to off-site venues and transport music if necessary.
