About The Position

The Assistant Land Surveyor (HELPS) position at New York State Civil Service involves performing complex survey computations, interpreting historic land records, and preparing survey maps under the supervision of a Professional Land Surveyor. Requirements

  • Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Surveying Examination (FS) for Full Level - SG-20.
  • A bachelor's degree in surveying or surveying technology from an accredited institution for Trainee Level - SG-18.
  • Eligibility to sit for the Fundamentals of Surveying examination through the National Council for Examiners of Engineering and Surveying.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in negotiating contracts with private land surveyors.
  • Familiarity with State land boundary determinations.
  • Knowledge of littoral and riparian rights.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex survey computations and calculations.
  • Interpret historic land records and legal documents.
  • Prepare and interpret survey maps.
  • Supervise real property inventory staff.
  • Exercise professional judgment on State land boundary determinations.
  • Negotiate contracts with private land surveyors and inspect surveys, maps, and contract compliance.
  • Perform surveys for the agency as needed, including preparation of survey maps and descriptions.
  • Prepare detailed title and/or survey reports.
  • Assist the Senior Land Surveyor with examination of records for grants and easements.
  • Answer inquiries via letters, memos, emails, and telephone.
  • Assist in determining littoral and riparian rights.
  • Ensure quality control of survey-related products and data integrity.
  • Provide direct supervision and technical direction to the Assistant Land Surveyor.
  • Sign and seal survey maps.
  • Testify in court cases involving property disputes or trespass on State-owned land.
  • Maintain the State's Real Property Inventory.

Benefits

  • Geographical pay differential of $7,000 annually for the Assistant Land Surveyor, SG-20 title only.
