About The Position

The Pittsburg State University Department of Art is accepting applications for an Assistant Instructional Professor of Art History/ Gallery Director a dual-role faculty position responsible for teaching undergraduate art history courses and providing comprehensive leadership for the galleries in Porter Hall. This position supports the academic mission of the department while developing and maintaining an exhibition program that includes scheduled shows, artist engagement, and student learning opportunities.

Requirements

  • MA in Art History
  • 1+ year university level teaching experience in Art History, candidates with graduate teaching experience will be considered.
  • 1+ year gallery management and exhibition preparation experience.
  • Candidate's must hold a Master's degree in Art or related field. This degree requirement is necessary for accreditation purposes and to ensure candidates possess the specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities that can only be attained through a formal educational program at this level.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Teach three Art History courses per semester, this will include survey courses, upper-division courses in modern art history and contemporary art history.
  • Develop and maintain high-quality course materials, incorporating current scholarship and inclusive , evidence-based pedagogical practices that support diverse learners.
  • Provide academic and professional mentorship to students through advising, feedback, and career guidance.
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university service activities such as committee work, program development, or student engagement initiatives.
  • Collaborate on grant-writing projects
  • Provide full administrative and creative oversight for the university’s art galleries.
  • Manage all aspects of the exhibition cycle per academic year including layout design, artwork installation, lighting coordination, installation and deinstallation of artworks.
  • Oversee gallery operations, including exhibition scheduling, publicity and receptions, coordinated social media, and student worker coordination when applicable.
  • Develop and implement outreach initiatives, partnerships, and programming to support student learning and community engagement.
