About The Position

A position has been declared open in the Weber School District for an Elementary Assistant Head Custodian. This position is for 8.00 hours per day, 257 days (12 months) per year, is compensated according to Lane 2 of the Custodial Salary Schedule , and is eligible for benefits . Purpose Statement The job of Assistant Head Custodian, Elementary School was established for the purpose/s of maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility for students, staff and public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure; ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner and overseeing assigned part-time custodians in the performance of their assignments.

Requirements

  • Knowledge Custodial procedures and best practices, including cleaning, sanitizing, floor care, and equipment use.
  • Safety standards and OSHA regulations related to chemicals, cleaning supplies, and equipment.
  • Basic building maintenance (minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC awareness).
  • Proper handling and storage of hazardous materials (SDS sheets, chemical protocols).
  • School district policies related to facility use, security, and emergency procedures.
  • Skills Effective communication skills to work with staff, administrators, contractors, and students.
  • Leadership and teamwork skills, including directing and training custodial staff as needed.
  • Time management and organizational skills to prioritize tasks and manage daily schedules.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making in routine maintenance, emergencies, and unexpected situations.
  • Operation of custodial equipment, including floor scrubbers, buffers, vacuums, ladders, and minor tools.
  • Abilities Ability to work independently and take initiative, especially when the Head Custodian is unavailable.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete tasks accurately.
  • Ability to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming school environment aligned with district standards.
  • Ability to supervise or lead small teams when assigned.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and interact appropriately in a school environment.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and climbing (including ladders and stairs).
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions such as sweeping, mopping, and wiping.
  • Ability to operate custodial machinery and tools safely.
  • Ability to perform tasks in varying temperatures, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, odors, and noise from equipment.
  • Frequent interaction in schools populated by children, requiring awareness and safety considerations.
  • Ability to work early mornings, evenings, or occasional weekends depending on building needs.
  • Ability to understand and apply safety instructions and SDS information.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changing needs during the school day.
  • Ability to interact professionally with students, staff, and the public.
  • Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Arranges and supervises the arrangement of furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for assemblies, lunchroom, meetings, classroom activities, and special events.
  • Chairs risk management committee and serves on other school committees as may be required for the purpose of conveying information and/or receiving information.
  • Cleans and supervises the cleaning of the school facilities (e.g. classrooms, offices, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, grounds, snow removal, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
  • Coordinates scheduled special events, meetings, community functions, etc. (e.g. records hours facility used, custodial hours required, equipment used, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of facilities and/or equipment and providing information required for billing.
  • Delivers various items (e.g. supplies, mail, packages, furniture, etc.) for the purpose of distributing materials to the appropriate parties.
  • Directs assistant head custodian, part-time custodial personnel and substitute staff for the purpose of maximizing the efficiency of the work force, assisting in performance evaluations, and meeting shift requirements.
  • Inspects school facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and performing necessary minor repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc. and/or referring to other district personnel for resolution.
  • Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuums, mops, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities.
  • Performs fire drills for the purpose of ensuring that staff and students are familiar with emergency procedures.
  • Prepares documentation (e.g. work schedules, work orders, requisitions, budget requests, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
  • Prepares facility for daily operations (e.g. opening gates, building access doors, disarming security systems, heaters, repairs, snow removal, programs bell systems, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring school facilities are operational and safe for occupancy.
  • Repairs furniture, doors, hangs blackboards, emergency repairs, replace filters, ceiling, walls, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the safe and efficient utilization of space.
  • Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns, including after hours (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, alarms, etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned by administration.
