About The Position

The Assistant Grocery Manager supports the Grocery Manager in the daily operation, merchandising, and performance of the Grocery Department. This role assists with driving sales, managing labor and shrink, overseeing inventory, and ensuring excellent customer service. The Assistant Grocery Manager provides leadership, training, and direction to department associates and helps maintain compliance with all company, state, and federal standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1–3 years grocery or retail experience preferred, including some supervisory responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of ordering, receiving, merchandising, and product handling strongly preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead by example, coach others, and build strong working relationships.
  • Ability to analyze basic reports such as sales, shrink, and in‑stock metrics.
  • Proficient in store systems, electronic ordering tools, and basic Microsoft Office programs.
  • Solid organizational, time‑management, and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in varying temperature zones including coolers and freezers.
  • Ability to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to safely use equipment such as pallet jacks, hand trucks, cutters, and cleaning tools.
  • Reliable attendance and schedule flexibility required.
  • Must follow all company policies, safety procedures, and food safety standards.
  • Must adhere to the Company Code of Business Conduct.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a welcoming, customer‑focused environment in all grocery areas.
  • Assist in handling customer inquiries, issues, and special requests promptly and professionally.
  • Support daily communication with associates to ensure service expectations are consistently met.
  • Model appropriate work behaviors and reinforce high service and operational standards.
  • Assist with execution of merchandising plans, promotional sets, schematics, and weekly ad layouts.
  • Ensure shelves are fully stocked, cleaned, organized, and properly rotated throughout the day.
  • Help prepare for seasonal transitions, departmental resets, and major promotional events.
  • Monitor backroom organization, receiving processes, and overall product flow to the sales floor.
  • Support accurate ordering to maintain in‑stock conditions while controlling shrink.
  • Conduct regular code‑date checks, product rotation (FIFO), and removal of unsellable items.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, temperature logging, and labeling requirements.
  • Help conduct inventory counts and support shrink control initiatives.
  • Assist with writing and adjusting weekly department schedules based on business needs.
  • Provide daily task direction to associates and verify work completion.
  • Ensure labor is used efficiently while maintaining service standards.
  • Complete required documentation including transfers, markdown logs, waste tracking, receiving records, and timekeeping compliance.
  • Participate in interviewing, training, onboarding, and coaching associates.
  • Monitor performance and escalate issues to the Grocery Manager or Store Director when needed.
  • Support cross‑training initiatives to ensure adequate coverage and associate development.
  • Promote teamwork, positive morale, and clear communication within the department.
  • Supports overall Grocery Department operations and financial performance.
  • Provides daily leadership for associates and may act as Grocery Manager in their absence.
  • Contributes to department readiness for audits, inspections, and leadership visits.
