This role will be located at one of Discovery Land Company’s locations: The Hills, set in East Quogue, New York. The Hills is seeking a full-time Assistant Golf Course Superintendent to join the Agronomy Department. Targeted start date of early March, 2026. The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for supporting the overall maintenance of the golf course and related equipment. The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent will oversee site supervision, scheduling, and project management including tracking project schedule, managing subcontractor milestones, responding to client inquiries/changes in a timely basis. In this role, you will be part of creating the Discovery Land Company experience for our members and fellow employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in turf management, agronomy, horticulture, or a related field (preferred).
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in golf course maintenance, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of turfgrass species, irrigation systems, and golf course agronomy practices.
  • Well versed in all aspects of Golf Course Construction and management of Golf Course Construction personnel.
  • Valid driver's license and pesticide applicator's license (or ability to obtain).
  • Positive attitude, professional demeanor, and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to deliver service to members, guests, and team members.
  • Must be able to work flexible work hours/schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Long hours may be required due to business demands.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to stay calm and focused during the busiest of times.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English; additional languages preferred.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position including, but not limited to, working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, standing, walking, and moving for periods of greater than eight (8) hours, and lifting and carrying items sometimes greater than fifty (50) pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for supporting all site supervision on designated golf course construction projects.
  • Maintain a safe, clean and organized jobsite consistent with that of a Discovery Builders Golf staff member.
  • Create an environment of professionalism, respect, timeliness, and accountability among the project team.
  • Maintain overall project schedules.
  • Manage self-perform labor and outside labor and sub-contractors.
  • Quality control.
  • Requests information and coordinates with the project manager and Golf Course Superintendent.
  • Tracks material procurement to ensure schedule goals.
  • Ensures project completion.
  • Punch list and turnover to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Provide input to Golf Course Superintendent for project schedules.
  • Input data into weekly reports for the project manager.
  • Ongoing support of development initiatives to ensure coordination of efforts with operations and sales.
  • Client interaction; confirming schedule milestones and project means and methods.
  • Support management all aspects of golf course maintenance, including mowing, fertilization, pest control, and irrigation.
  • Assists with the operation and maintenance of all grounds for the project including landscape, grounds and common areas.
  • Works closely with other departments to ensure consistency within the overall project and development relating to landscape and grounds.
  • Oversees the drainage, irrigation and watering systems.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive turf management programs to maintain optimal playing conditions year-round.
  • Maintains course in proper playing condition.
  • Supervises all planting, fertilizing and care of turf, plants, shrubs, trees and other facilities on the golf course.
  • Recruits, trains, schedules, supervises, and evaluates all personnel assigned to department.
  • Maintains accurate work records for all personnel in the department.
  • Plans professional development and training activities for subordinates.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the course to identify areas for improvement and develop action plans accordingly.
  • Conducts daily facility security checks ensuring accurate inventory of equipment and keys.
  • Supervises operation of the equipment repair shop.
  • Maintains all grounds and course maintenance equipment.
  • Oversee equipment maintenance and repair, ensuring all machinery is in proper working condition.
  • Collaborate with golf course management to plan and execute course improvement projects.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, expenses, and inventory.
  • Keeps accurate schedules and records of all maintenance completed on course.
  • Insures that chemicals, petroleum and other controlled products are used, stored, and disposed of in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.
  • Maintains required records and strives to minimize the use of chemicals and petroleum products.
  • Selects and prepares proper fertilizers and nutrients for all flora and fauna.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and best practices for sustainable golf course management.
  • Implements and enforces comprehensive safety program for employees, members and guests on course in compliance with local, state and federal laws.
  • Prepares and revises grounds manual.
  • Keeps members informed about current and future maintenance activities.
  • Communicates with other departments as necessary.
  • Attends turf conferences, equipment shows, workshops and other educational programs to maintain a current knowledge of technical and turf innovations and changes that could affect the department’s operations.
  • Attends staff and management meetings.
