The fundamental reason this classification exists is to assist with the leadership, planning, and coordination of daily animal care operations, including supervision of zookeeping staff, husbandry routines, enrichment programming, and exhibit maintenance. The Assistant General Curator ensures high standards of animal welfare and regulatory compliance while supporting zoo-wide initiatives related to animal management, staffing, training, and interdepartmental collaboration. This position plays a key leadership role in staff development and oversight, helping manage zookeepers and stepping in to ensure consistent care and safety practices when necessary. The Assistant General Curator serves as the weekend Manager on Duty and collaborates with the General Curator in operational planning, exhibit development, budgeting, and strategic animal collection decisions. Work is performed under the supervision of the General Curator (Zoo).
