About The Position

Howard Payne University Athletics seeks a Restricted Earnings Assistant Football Coach who is passionate about developing young men, building championship habits, and advancing a Christ-centered football culture. This position will play a vital role in leading the developmental football team and supporting on-campus recruiting efforts, helping position HPU as a destination university for student-athletes who desire competitive excellence, strong mentorship, and intentional growth. The successful candidate will embrace HPU Athletics’ commitment to excellence, servant leadership, unity, and intentional development, while operating within NCAA Division III restricted earnings guidelines.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required.
  • One to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required
  • Must be able to read, write and converse effectively in English in order to follow the University's Administrative Policies and safely perform the essential duties of the job
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, fans, or employees of the University.
  • Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches or presentations to University trustees, administration, other employees and the public
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have a good working knowledge of commonly used Internet browsers; Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel software
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and maintain a valid Texas driver's license to drive any vehicle, including personally owned vehicles, on behalf of the University
  • Must be able to travel to appropriate out of town contests and meetings

Responsibilities

  • Coach and oversee the developmental football team, ensuring continuity with varsity philosophy, schemes, and culture
  • Teach fundamentals, technique, and football IQ with an emphasis on effort, discipline, and accountability
  • Assist in practice planning, drill development, and on-field instruction
  • Support the holistic development of student-athletes—athletically, academically, spiritually, and personally
  • Lead and assist with on-campus recruiting initiatives, delivering a welcoming, organized, and mission-aligned visit experience
  • Coordinate with admissions, financial aid, and campus partners to support recruiting and retention
  • Assist with junior days, camps, game-day visits, and prospect events
  • Help communicate the HPU Athletics vision, culture, and expectations to prospective student-athletes and families
  • Assist with film breakdown, opponent scouting, and data management as assigned
  • Support logistical operations such as practice setup, equipment organization, and event execution
  • Participate fully in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head Football Coach
