About The Position

This position is responsible for assisting the Head Football Coach in all facets of the program, including but not limited to: organizing and conducting team meetings, training, and practices, recruiting, team travel logistics, scholar-athlete development, and compliance with all applicable rules and regulations. The Assistant Football Coach is responsible for developing and mentoring approximately 20 student-athletes. This position is also involved in coaching special teams, including planning, scouting, and player development. Additional administrative responsibilities as assigned by the Head Football Coach. Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree, or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is required.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to be insured under the College’s authorized driver’s policy are required to drive college-owned vehicles.
  • The individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
  • Deploy professional skills, in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the College’s strategic interests.
  • An evident understanding of the role of athletics in the liberal arts college environment is required along with proven experience in recruiting student-athletes to highly selective institutions.
  • Strong administrative, interpersonal skills, and computer/technology skills.
  • Appropriate certifications in First Aid, CPR, AED, or willingness to complete certifications upon hire if working independently with student-athletes.
  • Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and associated professional software (such as Internet research, and menu-driven databases).
  • Demonstrate understanding of the use of equipment in assessing and improving department systems and processes to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate effective, accurate, and clear communication with excellent/strong verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, phone, and customer service skills.
  • Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of duties.
  • Use strong organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and keen attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous collegiate participation and coaching are preferred.
  • Experience in the recruitment of academically focused scholar-athletes is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Football Coach with developing and implementing training and instruction for practices and competitions
  • Assist with the design of and independently facilitate pre- and post-game workouts and conditioning and training of the athletes.
  • Work with the offensive or defensive coordinator to create and implement offensive game plans.
  • Assist with administrative aspects of the sports program. This may include but is not limited to: prompt completion of all administrative paperwork, team travel logistics, creation of practice plans, scholar-athlete and team development, and collaboration with CMS athletics staff in sports medicine, business operation, compliance, equipment, facilities, and events.
  • Participate in alumni and community outreach programs including public speaking engagements, clinics, camps, and alumni events. May attend fundraising events in a supporting role.
  • Recruit and retain academically qualified student-athletes to the highly selective liberal arts institutions of Claremont McKenna College (CMC), Harvey Mudd College (HMC), and Scripps Colleges.
  • Comply with all rules and guidelines set forth by the NCAA Division III, CMS Athletics, and the SCIAC, reporting any violations or concerns to the CMS Compliance Department.
  • Remain in good standing of all required training and certifications, including but not limited to concussion management, mental health resources, and sexual violence prevention.
  • Represent CMS Athletic Department and the football program positively within the SCIAC, regionally, and nationally.
  • Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.
