About The Position

Mortenson is hiring an Assistant Equipment Solutions Manager-Cranes. This role supports Mortenson’s crane program by helping manage the crane fleet as a category-managed internal rental business: forecasting demand, supporting fleet and capital plans, coordinating deployment, and ensuring strong cost, utilization, and service outcomes across the portfolio. You’ll partner with other Equipment Solutions Managers, project teams, crane operations stakeholders, and external vendors to connect the dots between jobsite execution and business performance—making sure we have the right lifting capacity, at the right time, at the right total cost. Location: Minneapolis, MN (On-site 5 days/week)

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years of experience in construction, equipment rental, and/or project management experience or 8+ years of equivalent professional trade experience
  • Experience with budget planning and financial oversight.
  • Familiarity with basic maintenance/service schedules.
  • Effective verbal and written communication; ability to multitask and prioritize based on workload.
  • Strong organizational, customer service, and computer skills (Excel emphasis).
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License with clean driving record
  • Ability to travel up to 15%

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting crane or heavy construction equipment programs (owned fleet and/or third-party rental coverage)
  • Strong analytical capability (forecasting, cost drivers, utilization and performance reporting); advanced Excel skills
  • Experience coordinating equipment logistics (mobilization/demobilization planning, moves, and vendor coverage) in a schedule-driven environment
  • Experience in vendor management and commercial conversations tied to availability, cost, and service outcomes (including negotiation support and business reviews)
  • Ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and drive standard work/continuous improvement across multiple teams
  • Experience leading, mentoring, or developing team members (team size may vary).

Responsibilities

  • Support the crane category as an internal rental/fleet business: connect project demand signals to fleet positioning, pricing, and lifecycle planning.
  • Lead and/or support financial forecasting and budgeting for crane utilization, revenue recovery, maintenance/repair spend, and logistics/transfer costs; support monthly/quarterly review cadence and variance narratives.
  • Build and maintain demand forecasts (near-term scheduling + longer-range pipeline), identifying risk periods (peaks, gaps, and regional constraints) and recommending mitigation (moves, vendor coverage, timing adjustments).
  • Support business case development for fleet additions/replacements (capital planning, utilization assumptions, lifecycle and total-cost framing), including post-deployment learning loops to improve future investment decisions.
  • Contribute to rate strategy and internal cost recovery alignment, balancing competitiveness for project teams with sustainability of fleet ownership.
  • Equipment planning and scheduling with internal project teams, Equipment Solutions teammates, and third-party vendors (including supplemental crane providers when needed).
  • Coordinate crane logistics planning (mobilization/demobilization, transportation alignment, and schedule risk mitigation).
  • Support vendor relations and sourcing efforts for key crane-related services (rental partners, hauling, specialty support, OEM/dealer service channels).
  • Help ensure fleet readiness through coordination with maintenance/service planning stakeholders and reliable tracking of inspections, service intervals, and equipment condition fundamentals.
  • Support rental software contract management and high-quality data (asset records, utilization/billing accuracy, move history, service tracking).
  • Create and maintain reporting tools/dashboards that translate fleet activity into business insights (utilization, cost drivers, forecast accuracy, and vendor performance).
  • Lead department initiatives for standard work, playbooks, training, and continuous improvement (with a bias toward safety, clarity, and repeatability).
  • Help manage and develop non-craft team members; support coaching, training, and team performance within the crane program.
  • Support innovation by encouraging new process development and data-driven decision-making.
