Assistant Editor, ConservativeHome
About The Position
An exciting opportunity to join the editorial team of ConservativeHome, the leading independent conservative news and analysis site. The role is open to journalists, but we also invite applications from candidates in other fields who are looking to break into the media – e.g. MPs’ staffers, advisers, speechwriters, campaigners, policy specialists and beyond. You don’t have to currently be a journalist to apply – above all, we’re seeking someone who can write original, informative, insightful content, with knowledge of politics and the Conservative Party, and the ability to learn quickly. This position also offers the chance to develop your profile (and freelance income) as a commentator in the print and broadcast media.
Requirements
- Excellent written English.
- The ability to prioritise and work to deadlines under pressure.
- Political knowledge/experience. You are excited by political events, have a good understanding of Westminster, the Conservative Party, and centre-right Uk politics, and are keen to develop. Maybe you already work in a newsroom, campaign, MP’s office, think tank, public affairs team or similar.
- Writing experience. You write about politics to a high standard and with a genuine passion - this might be for established print or online outlets, a personal or organisation’s blog, or similar. You know how to develop an engaging argument.
- Drive and initiative. You are able to generate article ideas and to adapt in a fast-changing environment.
- Effective at working both independently in a remote setting, and as part of a small team in our Westminster-based office.
- Keen to develop. You are enthusiastic to make the most of a new opportunity, and are open to learning new skills.
- Experience and understanding of social media.
- Sympathy with the values and aims of ConservativeHome.
Nice To Haves
- Experience using WordPress.
- Event chairing/hosting (e.g. chairing panel discussions).
- Broadcast/podcasting.
Responsibilities
- Writing engaging news, opinion and analysis articles on UK politics, produced daily and to deadlines.
- Editing articles from other contributors;
- Supporting the Editor in producing ConservativeHome content;
- Duty Editor shifts, including the production of our morning newsletter. The Assistant Editor would normally do around three such shifts per week;
- Chairing ConservativeHome events and providing expert analysis at ConservativeHome events, in-person and online;
- Representing ConservativeHome in the broadcast media;
- Managing social media channels.
