The Assistant District Forester plays a crucial role in managing forest protection, resource management, and environmental education within the North Carolina Forest Service. This position involves overseeing compliance with various forestry programs, directing wildfire response efforts, and performing administrative duties related to personnel and resource management. The role requires readiness for emergency situations and may involve extended hours and travel.

  • Manage and ensure compliance of the Forest Management, Water Quality, Ranger Training, GIS programs, and cost-share programs.
  • Direct and coordinate work on the District's Remote Access Weather Stations and National Fire Danger Rating programs.
  • Oversee Community Wildfire Protection Planning and fuel mitigation projects.
  • Function in various positions on prescribed burns and within the Incident Command System's Operations and Planning Sections during wildland fires and other incidents.
  • Perform administrative duties including personnel hiring, performance management, and purchasing.
  • Bachelor's degree in forestry from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited institution and four years of related professional Forestry experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of forest management silviculture and regeneration practices.
  • Knowledge of wildland fire suppression strategy and tactics, or prescribed burning.
  • Knowledge of environmental rules and regulations.
  • Experience training others in forestry-related subjects or matters.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to develop good working relationships, be self-motivated, and service-oriented.
  • Good leadership skills.
  • Experience in mountain fire suppression strategies and tactics.
  • Experience with hardwood silviculture and related timber stand improvement and regeneration practices.
  • Experience working with GPS units to measure or survey land.
  • Experience with the Incident Command System Planning Section.
  • Prescribed Burn Boss qualified.
  • NC Pesticide Applicators License.
  • Official NCFS uniforms and vehicle provided at employer expense.
