SALARY RANGE: $65,000.00 - $80,000.00 THIS UNION COUNTY-FUNDED POSITION IS FULL-TIME. The Union Co. DA's Office is seeking to fill an entry-level Assistant District Attorney (ADA) position. Our office represents the State of North Carolina in the prosecution of people charged with criminal offenses and serves as advocates for crime victims. We are responsible for prosecuting everything from traffic tickets to First Degree Murder and everything in between. The attorneys we hire are given immediate opportunities to handle serious matters, try cases in the courtroom, and make their community a safer place. Our new attorneys are mentored by experienced prosecutors and are taught everything they need to know to become effective courtroom advocates. Our attorneys perform this impactful and important work in a supportive and collaborative DA's Office environment. Union County is located just southeast of Charlotte and is one of the most rapidly growing areas in the state. With a population of approximately 270,000 people, Union County encompasses both suburban and rural communities. Candidates must have (or will soon have) an active North Carolina license to practice law. No prior legal experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn. A strong work ethic and a desire to be part of a team are required, as is a desire to do trial work. A well-developed sense of fairness and a readiness to serve your community are advantages. Knowledge of: North Carolina statutes, common law, and case law; judicial procedures and rules of evidence; case, statutory, and common law; legal research methods, techniques, sources, databases, and other research tools; the operations of the NC court system; and ethical and professional standards of conduct. Skill in: interpreting and applying criminal laws to information, evidence, and other data; using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of case facts; researching and identifying precedents in case law; utilizing electronic legal research and online systems; organizing work; setting priorities; meeting critical deadlines; and following up on assignments with a minimum of direction. Ability to: analyze facts and apply applicable law to those facts; conduct legal research; plan, develop, and execute an effective litigation strategy to achieve desired results; prepare, organize, and conduct witness examinations; deliver opening statements, closing arguments, and evidentiary objections; express complex legal concepts and related facts in a clear and concise manner; argue clearly, logically, and persuasively; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with attorneys, law enforcement agencies, and other participants in the criminal justice process; recognize and solve problems; produce legal interpretations in a quick and responsive manner for court officials; write reports, motions, briefs, and other legal documents; deal tactfully with sensitive situations; communicate both orally and in writing; and work independently.
