About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Public Information Officer, the Assistant Disease Investigator is responsible for investigating and monitoring known or potential sources of suspected infections and/or communicable diseases, determining original source, ensuring infection control, and assisting in the reduction of transmission.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a B.S. degree in public health, nursing, biology, or a closely related degree AND two (2) years of full-time paid professional experience working in a medical or health related field.
  • Graduation of an accredited Practical Nursing Program with current LPN license in the State of Utah AND one (1) year of paid professional employment in a medical or health related field.
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program AND two (2) years of paid professional employment in a medical or health related field.
  • Knowledge of Communicable disease, disease prevention, universal precautions and infection control, blood borne pathogens, respiratory protection, health assessment, health promotion, behavioral change, group process, community/organizational development theory and techniques
  • Knowledge of Methods of transmission, diagnosis and treatment of communicable diseases
  • Knowledge of Laws pertaining to the control and reporting of communicable disease
  • Knowledge of Communicable and infectious disease investigation and inspection techniques, methods, and practices
  • Knowledge of Medical terms and principles of exposure, infection, infectious period, potentially infectious interactions, symptoms of disease, pre-symptomatic and asymptomatic infection
  • Knowledge of Methods of medical record-keeping
  • Knowledge of Methods and techniques of conducting interviews.
  • Ability to Develop and maintain cooperative, effective working relationships with others
  • Ability to Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to Apply customer service skills, including the identification of customer needs and follow up to ensure customer commitments have been met
  • Ability to Conduct effective interviews of a highly personal nature
  • Ability to Use initiative and tact in tracing contacts for follow-up treatment
  • Ability to Work effectively with medical personnel and public officials
  • Ability to Write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to Work well under pressure, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, work well in team situations, meet deadlines, provide customer service, strictly follow all confidentiality laws, and be able to work independently on a day-to-day basis.
  • Be able to pass a full background check and drug screening
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid Utah Driver License at the time of employment
  • Be able to provide your own transportation
  • Be able to lift 50 pounds and be able to perform strenuous activities requiring flexibility and stamina, and overall general good health
  • Have a flexible schedule and be available for scheduled work in the evenings and/or weekends and holidays as the job requires.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Experience working in public health or in disease investigation
  • Knowledge of vaccine schedule
  • Experience with electronic health records

Responsibilities

  • Assist with local health district communicable and infectious disease investigations
  • Provide community outbreak identification and response
  • Work with state and local disease investigators to identify risk of spread and responds appropriately
  • Interview and re-interview persons infected with or suspected of having a communicable or infectious disease
  • Identify and notify individuals that have been exposed and may be infected with a communicable or infectious disease
  • Work to ensure patient confidentiality is maintained throughout investigations
  • Participate in the Infection, Prevention, and Control (IPC) training program
  • Provide support for long-term care facilities investigation in coordination with the Utah Department of Health
  • Respond to public health emergencies
  • Complete other duties as assigned
