About The Position

The Assistant Director of the Butler Center for Volunteer Service and Leadership Development (leadership focus) serve as an essential member of the Student Life team and has direct reporting responsibility to the Senior Director of the Butler Center. The mission of the Butler Center for Service and Leadership is to serve as a catalyst in developing students who cultivate positive social change within their communities. The Butler Center serves as an integral part of the Division of Student Affairs and works closely with the Student Center Complex, Department of Student Activities and Student Organizations, the Department of Orientation and Commuter Student Involvement, Multicultural Student Affairs, and the LGBTQ Student Center.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of progressive related experience in Higher Education student affairs and/or leadership development/community service/civic engagement.
  • Master’s degree in higher education or higher preferred.
  • Must be able to operate professionally and autonomously; knowledge of leadership development theories; must have customer service, organization, and planning skills.
  • Will be expected to work some nights and weekends.
  • Ability to be productive in a fast-paced, multi-dimensional work environment.
  • A proven ability to effectively collaborate and build strong relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners.
  • Experience working in a culturally diverse environment and a commitment to understanding and supporting multicultural perspectives.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven adaptability, flexibility, and creativity.

Responsibilities

  • Student Programming Serves as the primary administrator responsible for the management and oversight of the student leadership development process and outreach to community partners to enhance civic participation and leadership development among students.
  • Provide support and assistance with the direct and indirect advisement of approximately 30 student service clubs, organizations, advocacy groups, and action committees with approximately 2000 members.
  • Responsible for the advisement and management of several of the leadership program boards, steering committees, and leadership conferences/symposiums sponsored by the Butler Center for Service and Leadership.
  • Designs, plans, and coordinates the Patricia A. Whitely’s Leadership Symposium.
  • Designs, plans, and coordinates First Year U: Learning, Leadership and Community, a fall semester intensive and interactive leadership program composed of new freshmen students.
  • Oversee the planning, recruitment, and selection of students involved in the Canes Ignite Mentorship Program.
  • Administrative Assist the Director with oversight and implementation of strategic planning initiatives regarding leadership education and student development.
  • Assists with planning, liability assessment, and implementation of university-wide programming.
  • Utilizes social media platforms to promote and connect students to the leadership development programming, community initiatives, and services provided by the Butler Center for Service and Leadership.
  • Produces publications as needed to promote programs and services for the Butler Center.
  • Responsible for the design and publishing of a weekly leadership and service e-newsletter called The Butler Connection.
  • Assist in the coordination and implementation of the Leadership UMiami program with fellow professional staff members.
  • Coordinates the annual Celebration of Involvement Reception to recognize excellence in student leadership.
  • Assist the Director in the recruitment and selection of students representing the University of Miami at the ACC Leadership Symposium.
  • In consultation with the Director, evaluates effectiveness and objectives for campus engagement activities and events (service-related and leadership) through the development and implementation of assessment instruments.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director.
  • People Management Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate 16 Butler Center student employees.
  • Sets developmental goals and plans with student employees each semester to maximize performance.
  • Leads the student employees in the leadership and marketing committee.
  • Assists with student employee training initiatives in conjunction with the Director and provides daily supervision.
  • Recruits, trains, supervises, and evaluates graduate students and practicum students in the office (as available).
  • Sets developmental goals and plans with graduate students and practicum students each semester to maximize performance.
  • Financial Responsibility Serve as budget signatory and provide oversight for budgets (student fees, SAFAC, and endowments) in excess of $50,000.
  • Assist the Director in ensuring that all student groups and office programs comply with all institutional policies and procedures, including ensuring that they operate within the parameters of funds allocated.
  • Negotiates, reviews, and executes all necessary event contracts by working closely with Financial Operations, Risk Management, Purchasing, and the Office of General Counsel.
  • Coordinates logistics, publicity, and interaction between the University, University Facilities, Act/Agent, and appropriate vendors.
  • Assist in managing accounts, working closely with staff in Purchasing, Accounts Payable, and Disbursements to ensure goods and services are acquired and paid through approved University processes.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of events through the development and implementation of assessment instruments.
  • Engages in the research and development of grant proposals.
  • Assists the Director in the preparation, follow-up, and implementation of any proposals, specifically as it relates to reconciling financial obligations.
  • Engage in fundraising activities and donor cultivation to support departmental programs and services under the advisement of the Director.
  • Decision-Making/Strategy Contributes ideas and viewpoints to the Director on operational and strategic plans for the department, campus/community programs, and events, as well as collaborative partnerships.
  • Makes daily independent decisions to ensure department objectives are met and that University policies and procedures are followed.
