About The Position

The Assistant Director for Special Programs at Michigan State University is responsible for overseeing the management of various domestic study away programs, including the American Semester Program and new initiatives under the Spartan Global Learning Initiative. This role involves supervising the Special Programs Team, collaborating with various departments, and ensuring the quality and effectiveness of program management processes. The Assistant Director also plays a key role in communication with stakeholders and the onboarding of new team members, all while operating in a hybrid work environment.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in international studies, foreign language, area studies, communication, higher education administration, or a related field.
  • 5 to 8 years of progressively responsible experience in international program administration and supervision.
  • Conversational proficiency in a foreign language.
  • Experience studying or working abroad.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the special programs team, including performance reviews and professional development planning.
  • Review and realign special program coordinator work assignments annually.
  • Lead regular team meetings to monitor work issues and campus needs, setting agendas and assigning tasks as needed.
  • Serve as the primary contact for questions related to new special programs, program evaluation, and budgeting.
  • Collaborate with executive and associate directors on new program development under the Spartan Global Learning Initiative.
  • Support the implementation of the Spartan Global Learning Initiative by responding to steering committee recommendations and managing related projects.
  • Work with the EA Business Office to fine-tune program budget templates and processes.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications team on program promotion and outreach.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and refine systems, processes, policies, and procedures related to special program management.
  • Manage an assigned portfolio of education abroad programs, including budgeting and partner relationships.
