The Assistant Director of University Communications, under general supervision, oversees the strategic marketing and communication efforts of university units and departments while assisting the Director of University Communications with internal messaging and media relations. This position serves as oversight of unit communication coordinators while serving as the lead point of contact for unit strategy review and execution, while also coordinating the development of effective marketing/communications materials and implementing a strategic marketing/communications plan. This Assistant Director should have a strong attention to detail with excellent writing and editing skills.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations, journalism, communications, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Seven years of related experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and editing skills.
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software.
  • Proven ability to generate imaginative solutions.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others while also maintaining the ability to work independently on projects

  • This position requires work beyond normal business hours, weekends, and holidays
  • This is an on-site position located in Stephenville, Texas.
  • A portfolio of previous written work samples will be requested.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in directing internal and external agency communications.
  • Write, review and edit written materials, prepare scripts and presentations, and communicate with appropriate media personnel.
  • Strategize and lead unit coordinators for comprehensive marketing and communication plans aligned with division and university goals while maintaining brand standards.
  • Assist creative groups in development of effective marketing and communication materials including production and design direction, branding strategies, quality control of materials, brand and style guides, etc.
  • Create messaging to communicate priorities and impact. Share messaging and branding strategies that effectively communicate.
  • Advise website copy, maintenance and social media strategy.
  • Facilitates key agency events.
  • Assist with pitches and opportunities to various media outlets.
  • May supervise support staff.
  • Strategically manage and create content for the division’s digital media presence including website maintenance and social media while ensuring content is consistent with the university’s brand and messaging.
  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with local, state, and national media representatives and respond to media requests. Also serves as a tertiary point of contact to The Texas A&M University System.
  • Lead strategist for university internal communication. Serve as a member of executive communication groups, as requested.
  • Secondary spokesperson in proactively responding to crises and other media inquiries.
  • Write, edit, review and distribute communications through internal and external channels. Protects and promotes the university’s brand identity.
  • Leadership and project management for full-time employees, student workers and interns.
  • Other duties as assigned.
