About The Position

The McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia is seeking an Assistant Director of Student Engagement and Global Programs. The Student Engagement and Academic Advising team, a unit of McIntire’s Student Success Office, leads initiatives such as onboarding and orientation programs, global study experiences, community-building events, academic and global programs advising and support for Commerce-related student organizations, while collaborating with faculty to provide exceptional student support. This position is a key role that advances McIntire’s mission to prepare students to thrive as global citizens and future business leaders by managing a dynamic portfolio of global programs and delivering high-quality academic advising services. The McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia is recognized for excellence and innovation in undergraduate and graduate business education and scholarship. The School awards a Bachelor of Science in Commerce, as well as Master of Science degrees in the Management of Information Technology, Business Analytics, Commerce, Accounting, and Global Commerce. Requirements

  • Master's degree.
  • At least three years of experience. Additional experience can substitute for this Masters requirement.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, International Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Work experience in academic advising, education abroad, or student affairs.
  • Experience supporting global initiatives, including study abroad programs, international travel with students and faculty, and engagement with international student populations.
  • Expertise in designing and facilitating interactive workshops and presentations for college students.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with budget management.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft 365 and virtual collaboration platforms such as Zoom and Teams.
  • Familiarity with student advising systems, such as Stellic.
  • Proven experience with program assessment and using data to drive decisions and enhance outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary advisor for incoming exchange students, short-term study abroad, and a subset of undergraduate semester study abroad programs.
  • Provide comprehensive guidance on academic planning, partner university offerings, visa processes, housing, and intercultural preparation.
  • Support and develop pre-departure and re-entry programming.
  • Advise incoming international exchange students through onboarding, enrollment, and ongoing support.
  • Collaborate with partner institutions to ensure alignment with UVA and McIntire academic standards and set expectations for the student experience.
  • Create and maintain program resources and promotional materials.
  • Lead or support global program selection and scholarship processes, student workshops, and events.
  • Advise a designated cohort of undergraduate Commerce students, helping them achieve academic success through one-on-one appointments, small group advising, group presentations, and proactive communication.
  • Discuss course selection, academic planning, and meeting degree requirements.
  • Facilitate problem-solving and goal-setting conversations.
  • Refer students to appropriate School and University resources.
  • Maintain accurate student records and utilize advising technologies such as Stellic and the Student Information System.
  • Collaborate with faculty and academic support teams to enhance the advising experience.
  • Design and implement student engagement initiatives aligned with SSO goals.
  • Host or attend student events, workshops, and major school-wide programs.
  • Participate in committees, work groups, and strategic initiatives.
  • Contribute to assessment efforts to evaluate student learning outcomes and program effectiveness.
