YMCA Camp Silver Creek - Assistant Director of Programming 2026
About The Position
Since 1938, generations of campers have come to experience the joy and beauty of Camp Silver Creek. Located deep inside Oregon's Silver Falls State Park, historic Camp Silver Creek is a magical place for children and adults alike. Towering evergreens and a stream flow through the camp’s four units. In the center of camp, a beautiful field is perfect for field games and the lake welcomes boaters, fishermen, and even the early morning polar bear swimmers. We are actively hiring great role models who are energetic, collaborative, and hard working to join the team for this summer. The Assistant Director of Programming is a member of the summer leadership team at Camp Silver Creek. The AD of Programming is directly responsible for the activities, programs, and scheduling at camp. Specific job functions include oversight of program activity area directors, management of camp supplies, oversight of camp activities, and creation of staff activity assignment schedules.
Requirements
- At least 18 years of age
- Minimum of one prior summer in an overnight camp leadership role.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with staff, campers, and leadership.
- Experience planning, organizing, and scheduling large group activities.
- Ability to adapt programming based on weather, safety concerns, and camper needs.
- Proven leadership and supervisory experience, particularly in overseeing program staff.
- Creative problem-solving skills to enhance and improve camp programming.
- Strong organizational skills to manage camp schedules, supplies, and logistics efficiently.
- Ability to respond appropriately to safety and emergency situations.
- Completion of all training and onboarding prior to program start date or training due dates. Training is provided as needed after hiring.
- Must be CPR and First Aid certified or willing to become certified within the first 30 days of employment prior to camp start. (Certification classes available upon employment.)
- Current Oregon Food Handler’s Certification, or ability to obtain certification.
- Must be available during all of the following date: June 7 - June 13 (Program Staff Retreat) June 14 - June 20 (Mandatory All-Staff Training) June 21 - August 23 (Camp Season & Move-Out)
- Note: Off from 1:00pm on Wednesday, July 29th through 4:00pm on Saturday, August 1st.
- Must be physically capable of observing and listening for stressful situations at all times.
- Must be physically capable of lifting 40 pounds.
- Must be able to quickly reach a person and/or situation to prevent harm.
- Capable of effective and appropriate mental, emotional and social responses in a constantly changing, youth centered environment.
- All candidates must have reliable transportation. Job offers are contingent upon completion of a rigorous criminal history background check.
Responsibilities
- Supervises Outpost Lead, Waterfront Director, and Arts & Crafts Lead
- Oversees the planning and scheduling of all activities, including but not limited to: Skill Groups Choice Time Campfires Twilight Games Rags Candlelight (with the Waterfront Director and the Leadership Team)
- Running the Camp Silver Creek Social Media during the summer
- Monitoring weather forecasts, and creating backup and alternate plans for possible weather-affected changes in programming
- Planning staff appreciation events and activities
- Managing Lost & Found, including regular checking of names, making daily L&F announcements, and organization of items/bins. Bundling end of week for donation run.
- Assist in conducting staff and program observations, providing feedback to ensure high-quality programming and staff performance.
- Support the reset and preparation of camp between sessions, ensuring all areas are cleaned, organized, and ready before staff departure on Saturdays.
- Assist with curfew and bed checks to maintain a safe and structured overnight camp environment.
- Provide coaching and mentorship to staff, fostering professional growth, teamwork, and adherence to camp values.
- Participates in required mid-season leadership planning and training sessions to support program quality, staff alignment, and end-of-season readiness.
