About The Position

The Assistant Director manages the occupational health, safety and industrial hygiene programs at Idaho State University. This position reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for overseeing workplace safety and industrial hygiene initiatives, providing guidance on hazard controls, and managing specific programs related to respiratory protection, asbestos, and lead. The role also involves developing training for the campus community, preparing professional reports, and supervising staff specialists and student employees. The Assistant Director is expected to cultivate a positive safety culture and respond to off-hours emergencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health or safety, industrial hygiene, environmental science, chemistry, biology or a relevant science-related field.
  • Five years of experience with at least two of those years in industrial hygiene programs.
  • Ability to interpret laws and regulations to assist with University compliance.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment in unusual or new situations.
  • Strong communication skills (both written and oral).
  • Successful candidate must be able to wear an air-purifying respirator.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in science or a related field.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or working to attain CIH certification.
  • Experience conducting exposure assessments.
  • Experience managing a respiratory protection program.
  • Experience evaluating engineering controls including ventilation.
  • Prior experience in a college or university setting.

Responsibilities

  • Manages workplace safety and industrial hygiene programs.
  • Provide guidance on needed hazard controls and risk mitigation measures.
  • Manages the respiratory protection, asbestos and lead programs.
  • Serves as the technical lead on campus exposure monitoring.
  • Develops training for the campus community.
  • Prepares and reviews professional reports with findings and corrective actions.
  • Interprets technical data and communicates technical information to non-technical individuals in a meaningful way.
  • Supervises, directs and mentors staff specialists and student employees.
  • Utilizes continuous improvement principles in all EHSS responsibilities.
  • Cultivates a positive culture of safety by role modeling safe behavior and a demonstrated commitment to safety.
  • Assists the Executive Director with other programs as assigned.
  • Respond to off-hours emergencies.
