About The Position

The Assistant Director of Nursing is responsible for: This position assists the Director of Nursing in planning, organizing, developing, and directing the nursing department's functions in accordance with federal and state regulations governing nursing facilities. The role provides oversight and support in key clinical areas, including, but not limited to, the MDS process, clinical education, infection control, and assessment and care planning throughout the facility. The individual in this position collaborates with the Supportive Living service line to ensure that care delivery systems align with and support VMRC’s mission, vision, and values. In the absence of the Director of Nursing, this role serves as the Director of Nursing of record and assumes associated responsibilities. Requirements

  • Licensure & Education: Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of clinical leadership or supervisory experience in skilled nursing, transitional care, long-term care, or post-acute settings, experience with care planning, MDS processes, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance.
  • Clinical & Regulatory Knowledge: Strong knowledge of senior living, short-term rehabilitation, and long-term care practices. Working knowledge of CMS regulations, Virginia state survey requirements, infection prevention standards, and QAPI principles, familiarity with value-based care, quality measures, and reimbursement systems related to skilled nursing
  • Leadership & Collaboration: Ability to lead, supervise, and coordinate interdisciplinary teams, fostering a positive, accountable, and collaborative team culture, work effectively with the Director of Nursing, physicians, clinical leaders, frontline staff, residents, families, and external partners, demonstrates emotional intelligence, professionalism, and adaptability during change.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills, confident in facilitating meetings, training sessions, and interdisciplinary discussions.
  • Technology & Systems Proficiency: Proficient in electronic health records (EHR) and clinical documentation systems, strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), ability to use data dashboards and reporting tools to support quality and operational decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Integrates nursing care in Supportive Living that promotes the resident center approach, systems continuity and cost efficiency.
  • Participates in the recommendation, initiation and implementation of changes that will enhance service and programming.
  • Participates in the oversight to adhere to the industry's regulations and VMRC's program philosophy of service and care.
  • Participates in care plan and MDS assessment schedules and completion as indicated.
  • Participates comprehensive care plan meetings.
  • Participates in the writing of individualized care plans.
  • Participates with monthly/quarterly QA/QI reports and monthly state reports.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with federal, state, and local standards and codes.
  • Participates in and/or facilitates nursing employee communication and meetings as needed to assure compliance in standards and to support staff development and initiatives.
  • Participates in periodic review and revision of nursing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with governmental and VMRC standards.
  • Participates as a member of the Supportive Living (SL) team.
  • Participates in departmental and SL meetings/committees as requested (ex. QA, risk meeting, family meetings, nurse admin. meeting, etc.).
  • Active with the clinical educator for specific training and in-services to meet employee and residents' needs according to standards and regulations.
  • Coordinates with clinical education to host new employee orientation.
  • Serves as the acting Director of Nursing in the absence of the Director of Nursing.
  • Ensures employee work areas and resident neighborhoods are kept safe, clean and orderly.
  • Participates in a wide variety of special projects and compiles a variety of special reports.
  • Ensures the comprehensive resident care planning process is carried out, according to standards and regulations.
  • Ensures each resident has an MDS assessment completed and submitted to the state according to standards.
  • Recommends identified training needs to the Nurse Educator and participates in training.
  • Participates in review of resident medical record for proper documentation.
  • Champions resident-centered care.
  • Establishes and maintains a professional network with similar organizations as well as related industries.
  • Participates an annual plan of action (service line and professional development) with measurable and time limited goals to assess performance.
  • Assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to remain knowledgeable of market and industry trends, competitors and best practices for senior care.
  • Distributes service line workload to maximize team member talents.
  • Participates regularly in scheduled team meetings.
  • Provides immediate coaching and problem-solving for all direct reports.
  • Provides opportunities for personal and professional development including new tasks, related meetings/seminars, and financial support for professional development.
  • Provides personal support and encouragement for each direct report.
  • Demonstrates the ability to have crucial conversations.

  • Uses correct body mechanics to prevent injury to self, residents and other staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for and actively participates in staff development (professional growth) and continuing education to keep skills and required certification(s) up-to-date.
  • Demonstrates computer skills necessary to complete job tasks/responsibilities.
  • Attends all required in-services and service line staff meetings.
  • Participates in implementation of Emergency Planning and follows emergency and evacuation procedures.
