Assistant Director of In-District Special Education Programs

About the position

The Assistant Director of In-District Special Education Programs shall ensure the integrity of the IEP development process for all in-district special education programming. The ideal candidate will be an experienced and licensed teacher and administrator in the respective discipline area who has demonstrated exemplary teaching and instructional leadership skills.

Responsibilities

• Ensure the integrity of the IEP development process for all students in district placements.
• Review IEPs for compliance for all special education programs in the district.
• Ensure special education teachers follow all necessary procedures (paperwork, updated testing, meetings, etc.).
• Monitor and analyze students' progress in district special education programs by analyzing MCAS, ACCESS, and other district and school formative and summative assessments.
• Coordinate Early Intervention testing and meetings, including supporting the implementation of services.
• Ensure all necessary procedures, paperwork, updated testing, meetings, etc., are followed.
• Ensure that Special Education students receive all services identified in their Individual Education Plans.
• Support the completion of special education data collection in ASPEN for state data submissions.
• Supervise and assist in the evaluation of all Special Education teachers as assigned.
• Follow through and seek a resolution to all problems from teachers, parents, and building staff.
• Assist and mentor new Special Education teachers in all aspects of their duties (remediation, testing, scheduling, use of appropriate materials, ordering of materials).
• Attend and support the implementation of SEPAC meetings.
• Facilitate and manage the completion of state-required paperwork and compliance for the instruction and participation of students with disabilities.
• Support the recruitment, hiring, and retention of special education teachers and paraprofessionals for all district programs.
• Assist the Director of Special Education in assigned tasks to meet the district's special education reporting and compliance responsibilities.
• Communicate with Central Administration, Director of Special Education, and all Principals, informing them of situations and issues within their buildings and on specific students.
• Collaborate with all administrators, teachers, and guidance counselors to develop and monitor the inclusionary model.
• Order materials for yearly testing and new evaluations and ensure that updated, validated testing materials are used.
• Create new or expanded programs for students with disabilities when needed and realistically feasible.
• Remain current on instructional methods, educational materials, and technology to improve the teaching and learning of students with disabilities.
• Supervise the training and professional development of Special Education teachers in pupil assessment.
• Maintain documentation of data provided by teacher referrals to the District Curriculum Accommodation Plan.
• Assist counselors with programming and establishing the Special Education needs of students following the Evaluation Meeting and students transferring into the Everett Public Schools.
• Coordinate services at each school by disseminating all necessary information and resolving any problems.
• Schedule all review and reassessment meetings.
• Schedule and chair all meetings related to student services and needs as assigned.
• Discuss any problems with special education students with administrators, teachers, special education teachers, and guidance counselors.
• Organize the distribution of progress reports for Special Education students to regular classroom teachers and Special Needs teachers.
• Organize the Annual Review Schedule of students and notify parents, staff, and students.
• Perform such other duties and assume all other responsibilities that the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendents, and Director of Special Education may assign.

Requirements

• A Master's degree from an accredited institution.
• A graduate or an undergraduate major in special education.
• Five years or more of teaching experience.
• Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Certification for Special Education Administrator (All Levels) and moderate or severe special education.
• Must possess the Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Administrators Endorsement.
