About The Position

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is seeking a strategic and technical leader to oversee our digital ecosystem and advance our mission of sharing coverage on nuclear risk, climate change, and disruptive technologies. You will design the roadmap for our technology stack—including our web CMS, email marketing, paywall systems, and data analytics —to ensure our platforms are optimized for a global audience. In 1945 the Bulletin began as a mimeographed newsletter; over the past eight decades we have grown and evolved to reach audiences wherever they may be. This position will help continue that history by making sure the Bulletin ’s digital and data systems are prepared to pursue our mission in the present day. The Assistant Director of Digital Platforms is an integral member of the Communications team and works closely with other arms of the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
  • At least six years of professional experience involving digital systems; web development experience preferred.
  • Proven experience managing complex digital ecosystems and high-traffic websites.
  • Expertise in CRM, CMS, marketing & email automation, subscription & paywall management, and workflow automation & integration,
  • Deep knowledge of data privacy regulations and web accessibility standards.
  • Ability to bridge the gap between technical execution and high-level organizational goals.
  • Interest in journalism, international affairs, environmental issues, public policy, science/technology, or related discipline.
  • Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists including diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Team player who is flexible and comfortable with multi-tasking.

  • Experience in nonprofit, academic, or journalistic organizations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Digital Strategy & Product Leadership: Partner with executive leadership to design and execute the Bulletin ’s digital strategy.
  • Oversee the development and management of website and other digital products.
  • Guide organization-wide governance and support for digital initiatives.
  • Data, Analytics and Reporting: Develop robust data collection and reporting systems to track audience demographics and traffic patterns.
  • Collaborate with Communication and Advancement teams on lead scoring, donor segmentation, and A/B testing.
  • Deliver regular impact measurements for operational insights, grant reporting, and event marketing analytics.
  • Infrastructure & Technical Operations: Manage and optimize the full technology stack, ensuring high performance, and strict compliance with global privacy (GDPR/CCPA) and accessibility standards.
  • Manage technology vendors, digital budgets, internal hardware, and policy requirements.
