About The Position

The Prairie Farm Assistant Director of Animal Care plays a hands-on leadership role at the Champaign Park District’s interactive Prairie Farm. This position supports the Prairie Farm Director in ensuring excellent animal care, safe and engaging visitor experiences, and smooth daily operations. You’ll work closely with animals, staff, volunteers, and the public—stepping in as acting Director when needed—making this a rewarding opportunity for someone passionate about animal care and community education.

Requirements

• Minimum 18 years of age.
• Minimum one (1) year of experience working with livestock.
• Ability to work effectively with children, families, staff, and volunteers in a public-facing environment
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and maintain accurate records
• Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation
• Valid Illinois Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

• Assist with daily feeding, cleaning, and overall care of farm animals
• Monitor animal health and behavior; report concerns promptly
• Support training, supervision, and evaluation of seasonal staff and volunteers
• Help plan and implement Prairie Farm programs and activities
• Maintain clean, safe, and secure animal enclosures, facilities, and grounds
• Purchase, organize, and maintain animal care and program supplies
• Maintain accurate records, including attendance and incident reports
• Serve as acting Prairie Farm Director in the Director’s absence
• Uphold Park District safety policies, professionalism, and confidentiality standards
• Support positive relationships with visitors, families, and program participants
• Attend required meetings and trainings
• Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned
