The Assistant Chief Nursing Officer is responsible for providing leadership in planning, directing, coordinating, providing and improving health care services consistent with hospital policies, objectives and standards for measurement and maintenance of quality nursing care. The ACNO will develop strong leadership, business management and other skills necessary to progress to a CNO role in the organization. Participates in developing new programs, policies and education to support expansion of nursing and patient care services. Responsible for guiding and mentoring nursing managers and other staff under his/her direct supervision. In the absence of the CNO, assumes responsibility for her/his scope of duties.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a professional school of nursing with a bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Currently licensed by Alabama State Board of Nursing.
  • This position requires five to seven years of work experience in Medical Surgical Services in which management skills have been demonstrated.
  • Most recent 3 of the last 5 years leadership must have been in direct leadership role in a hospital setting or direct patient care environment.

Responsibilities

  • Providing leadership in planning, directing, coordinating, providing and improving health care services consistent with hospital policies, objectives and standards for measurement and maintenance of quality nursing care.
  • Developing strong leadership, business management and other skills necessary to progress to a CNO role in the organization.
  • Participating in developing new programs, policies and education to support expansion of nursing and patient care services.
  • Guiding and mentoring nursing managers and other staff under his/her direct supervision.
  • Assuming responsibility for her/his scope of duties in the absence of the CNO.
  • Directing and coordinating two or more departments through subordinate nurse manger.
  • Reviewing and evaluating overall performance of departments and establishes long-term goals and objectives.
  • Reviewing, evaluating, and approving training and development objectives and progress.
  • Handling departmental personnel actions.
  • Providing significant input to long-term goals and objectives.
