About The Position

The Assistant Director of International Services at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is responsible for managing the international services function, providing guidance to international staff and faculty, and consulting with academic management. This role involves overseeing immigration support services, ensuring compliance with immigration regulations, and developing programs to support the international community at UIC.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in social sciences, humanities, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in immigration law and management.
  • Strong knowledge of immigration laws, regulations, and procedures.
  • Ability to meet regulatory requirements as a Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer.
  • Knowledge of SEVIS and FLAG systems.
  • Effective leadership and management skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in higher education, international studies, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of H-1B, TN, LPR, O-1, and J-1 processes.
  • Strong analytical skills to resolve complex immigration problems.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the international services function providing advice and counsel to international staff and faculty.
  • Coach, mentor, and train international services advising staff on work assignments and team development.
  • Oversee employment-based immigration support services for the university's international employee population.
  • Monitor program effectiveness and develop new plans consistent with regulatory compliance and departmental operations.
  • Liaise with external groups such as the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Labor to resolve issues and provide information.
  • Ensure institutional compliance with employment-based immigration regulations.
  • Review, prepare, and interpret immigration documents for hiring international faculty and staff.
  • Prepare for filing H-1B, E-3, TN, O-1, and employment-based permanent residency petitions.
  • Advise academic department management on immigration regulations and procedures.
  • Develop orientation programs, immigration seminars, workshops, and social activities.
