About The Position

Assistant Directors of Advising within the College of Arts and Sciences' Tykeson Hall Hub oversee assigned divisional related grouping(s) of CAS majors and minors, and supervise a small group of academic advisors. In close collaboration with the Senior Director and Associate Director, the Assistant Director will work with departmental, program and advising leaders to carry out timely, accurate, holistic academic advising and career-related support. Assistant Directors work alongside advisors in advising and supporting students, develop strong referral practices and promote dissemination of information around advising best practices. Assistant Directors must be able to work with and guide advising practices around the needs of a diverse student population, to include first generation, low income, underrepresented, international, student veterans, first year and transfer students. Additionally, the position must guide advising practices around the needs of re-entry/reinstated students, students in crisis, and students experiencing academic difficulty. Assistant Directors must exhibit collaborative leadership and collegiality in a large team environment, actively creating a welcoming, supportive, inclusive, and accessible student-centered atmosphere. The role of the Assistant Director requires proactive communication and outreach to a variety of college departments, campus partners and service offices on campus; anticipating the needs of supervisees and students is important to support this outreach and articulate needs for resolution of challenges and/or barriers to student success.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree.
  • Three years of experience in academic advising, career counseling or similar role within college environments.
  • Two years of experience in supervising professional or student staff.
  • One year of experience guiding training, onboarding and performance evaluations, including goal setting with employees and/or student staff.
  • Knowledge of student development and academic advising theories and frameworks.
  • Knowledge of the standards applicable to Academic Advising Programs.
  • Knowledge of NACADA core values and competencies related to advisor training, support and best practices, focusing on holistic integrated academic and career advising.
  • Understanding of issues facing diverse student groups.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion including personal growth and development.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and assess advising initiatives or programs.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Proficiencies and training within advising technologies such as – DegreeWorks, Navigate and Microsoft 365, or similar.
  • Effective meeting facilitation skills, including ability to speak and lead trainings in front of large teams and groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to bridge the gap between individual priorities and organizational goals.
  • Effective organizational skills with ability to prioritize in fast-paced, detailed oriented, time sensitive environments.
  • Ability to timely respond and take initiative on tasks, anticipate next steps in process, and triage to colleagues as appropriate.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret student data to inform undergraduate advising outcomes and student success, with a strong understanding of data collection and distribution practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain partnerships.
  • Ability to learn university systems and structures.

Nice To Haves
