About The Position

The Assistant Director for Character in Community will be responsible for planning and managing activities within the Character in Community project, a comprehensive program designed to foster leadership and character education across all areas of the college community. This involves organizing and running a variety of development cohort-based opportunities for staff, faculty, and students to discover, evaluate, and expand leadership and character development practices relevant to their community and needs. A strong ability to manage and track financial details to support the program will be expected. They will work alongside the Faculty Director, while also collaborating with individuals and offices across campus, including the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Athletics Program, the Office of Student Activities, the Piper Center for Vocation and Career, the Lutheran Center for Faith, Values, and Community, and the Institute for Freedom and Community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • 3+ years of experience in program development (e.g., planning, recruiting, and sustaining events and activities) and financial management (e.g., creating and reconciling budgets in Excel, payments to vendors); additional relevant education may reduce the minimum years of experience required.
  • Experience organizing multiple projects while adhering to deadlines, budget, legal, and ethical requirements.
  • Familiarity with, and interest in, approaches to leadership or character development.
  • Strong communication skills that convey information to multiple internal and external audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced-level educational program development experience, negotiating with academic personnel, and navigating within a higher education environment.
  • Proven expertise with grant administration and reporting.
  • Expertise in the theory and practices of leadership and character development, particularly as it applies to areas aligned with the college's strategic priorities (e.g., Athletics, fine arts, music, business, health care, civic engagement, and sustainability).

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and executing grant-supported activities.
  • Assist the Faculty Director in designing and delivering learning community opportunities for students, staff, and faculty.
  • Provide support for the work of the Ole Leadership Academy and its continued expansion, in cooperation with the Athletics Program staff.
  • Strategize and collaborate with campus partners to develop and sustain new programming in response to project growth and emerging needs, aimed at creating opportunities for St. Olaf students to become "leaders of character."
  • Collecting and organizing program resources on character and leadership.
  • Organized meetings and workshops for the project Steering Committee and Character Advisory Group.
  • Coordinate with Marketing and Communications on marketing, advertising, and communications strategies for programming and events.
  • Coordinate activities for guest speakers with campus faculty and students.
  • Regular maintenance activities related to documentation, financial management, and reporting.
  • Tracking expenditures and preparing regular budget documents.
  • Consolidate data and generate annual reports for the granting agency.
  • Approving honoraria, stipends, and reimbursement documents for participants in learning communities and workshops.
  • Ensure compliance with guidelines and requirements from the grantor and the college.
  • Collaborate with the Faculty Director and other campus partners on assessment efforts.
  • As needed, participate in presenting updates to the steering committee, faculty, administration, and Board of Regents.
  • Recruiting and hiring student workers to provide administrative and clerical assistance.
  • Provide supervision and approve biweekly timecards.
  • Coordinate students' summer research work.
  • Other Duties as Assigned.
