About The Position

The Department of Student Activities is seeking an Assistant Director to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for the Extended Orientation area. This role supervises staff, manages programs, and supports student-led initiatives designed to enhance the transition experience for new students. The Assistant Director will serve as a secondary advisor for Aggie Transitions Camp and support advising efforts for Fish Camp, Venture Camp, and the Freshman Leadership Advisory Council. This position also contributes to departmental strategic planning, budgeting, assessment, and university-wide initiatives while ensuring the success of extended orientation programs for freshmen, transfer students, and other new Aggies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Six years of progressively responsible administrative or management experience in student affairs in higher education
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet and database programs
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

  • Advanced degree in higher education, student affairs or related field from an accredited institution
  • Five or more years post-graduate experience in higher education, student affairs, or specific area(s) described in this position description
  • Significant student group advising, leadership training, risk management, supervisory ability, and experience in the specific area(s) described in this position description

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for management of an area under the Department of Student Activities
  • Strategic planning for the area
  • Developing and adhering to the area budget
  • Ultimate responsibility for the programs and groups served by the area
  • University-wide consulting on behalf of the department
  • Contributing to department marketing and development as needed
  • Assessment planning and assisting the Director Staff with department-wide initiatives and planning
  • Responsible for direct or indirect supervision of budgeted employees, graduate and practicum students, and student workers and interns
  • Oversee the university program, Fish Camp
  • Reviewing risk management activities for Fish Camp
  • Programming and logistics of events for Fish Camp
  • Evaluation of programs for Fish Camp
  • Adherence to policies and procedures including judicial processes for Fish Camp
  • Financial oversight including budgeting for Fish Camp
  • Marketing and communication for various constituent groups for Fish Camp
  • Vendor and donor relationships for Fish Camp
  • Student travel for Fish Camp
  • Technological resources for Fish Camp
  • Inventory management for Fish Camp
  • Document review for Fish Camp
  • Serve as secondary advisor for Aggie Transition Camps (organization) directors, chairs, and counselors in duties as needed
  • Risk management activities for Aggie Transition Camps
  • Training and advising for users of services including curriculum design for Aggie Transition Camps
  • Programming of events for Aggie Transition Camps
  • Project management for Aggie Transition Camps
  • Evaluation of effectiveness of programs for Aggie Transition Camps
  • Significant direction and decision-making responsibility for Aggie Transition Camps
  • Advising students and participants in programs or events
  • Maintaining relationships with external partners, including former students, related to areas of responsibility
  • Advising may include leadership development, recruitment and retention, adherence to policies and procedures including judicial processes, and identifying development resources
  • Maintain positive working relationships with office and department stakeholders
  • Collaborates and communicates with staff and administrators who are integral to the success of the extended orientation programs
  • Develops/sustains collaborative partnerships with a variety of campus offices including academic affairs, student affairs, and auxiliary services
  • Participate on university, division, and/or department committees and task forces
  • Perform other duties as assigned
