Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a field of study from an accredited college or university that is relevant and/or directly related to the industry and work assignment.
  • At least 6-8 years of experience in progressive responsibility in the management of engineering programs and/or utility plant operations.
  • At least 6-8 years experience that demonstrates the ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • At least 6-8 years experience that demonstrates strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish rapport with persons of diverse backgrounds.
  • Substitution: An advanced degree (Masters or Doctorate) may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis if the degree is in a field of study directly related to the work assignment.
  • Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a current, valid Driver’s License.

Nice To Haves

  • Four years of professional experience as a licensed professional engineer.
  • Licensure through the State Board of Registration for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.
  • Participation and certification from programs within the Association of Physical Plant Administrators (APPA) and/or the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) organizations.
  • Licensure as a Stationary Engineer through the City/County of Denver.

Responsibilities

  • The Assistant Director provides leadership and support for Central Utility Plant Building operations and maintenance, general building maintenance and operations, Facilities projects, Finance and Administration, Planning and Design, and Infrastructure Safety and Compliance, all in support of the department’s mission.
  • The Assistant Director provides 3rd level supervisory oversight of subordinate CUP Chief Stationary Engineer, and 2nd level supervisory oversight of one maintenance supervisor, one maintenance supervisor, one program planner, one training specialist, and all subordinate staff. Supervisory responsibilities include recommendation of employment actions impacting staff pay, status, and tenure; this includes recommendations regarding corrective and disciplinary actions.
  • The Assistant Director is fully responsible for efficient, cost-effective and seamless Central Utility Plant (CUP) maintenance and operations functions. The Central Utility Plant produces and distributes thermal energy (steam & chilled water) to buildings at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus, including university buildings, UC-Health, and Children’s Hospital of Colorado. Steam and chilled water service is provided on a 24 hour, 7-day per week basis, used for comfort air conditioning and heating, and service processes.
  • The Assistant Director provides long-range planning of program goals and objectives, recommends allocated resource needs in both fiscal and human resource circumstance, and establishes guidelines for program implementation.
  • The Assistant Director will develop procedures to review, analyze, document, and recommend major capital equipment replacement, and provide recommendations regarding timeliness for the upgrade of equipment and systems.
