About the position

The Application and Cloud Security Team Leader at Northwestern Mutual is a pivotal role responsible for shaping the organization's application and cloud security strategy. This position involves leading a high-performing team, implementing robust security measures, and ensuring the security of cloud infrastructure and applications to protect the organization and its clients from evolving threats. The role is open to remote work, with some onsite presence required for those within 100 miles of Milwaukee or New York City.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the implementation of the Application and Cloud security strategy.
  • Guide and advise application and engineering leaders on security compliance requirements.
  • Stay informed about new and emerging threats, recommending initiatives to mitigate risks.
  • Manage relationships with external vendors and stakeholders to enhance security capabilities.
  • Mentor staff members to ensure consistency, quality, and productivity of deliverables.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in development, infrastructure, or cybersecurity.
  • 3+ years of experience leading and developing security engineering teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of risk management frameworks such as NIST, Cloud Security Alliance, and OWASP.
  • Strong understanding of cybersecurity tools such as SIEM, WAF, IAM, SAST, DAST, SCA.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Continuous improvement mindset, actively seeking opportunities to improve processes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Relevant certifications from reputable cloud and/or cybersecurity organizations, including GIAC, ISC(2), AWS Solutions Architect.
  • Extensive experience in application and cloud security, with a strong understanding of AWS, Azure, or Kubernetes platforms.
  • Technical depth and experience with programming and developing applications in the cloud using automated CICD pipelines.
